What’s a highly praised otome game that didn’t work for you?

Not necessarily a bad game, just one that everyone seems to love but you couldn't really get into. Was it the story, the MC, the LIs, the pacing, or just the overall vibe? I'm curious which popular games didn't live up to your expectations

For me, I think sometimes a game can be objectively well-made, but still not click with me personally.

Is there a popular otome game that you really wanted to love but just couldn't get into?

Jack Jeanne, Piofiore: Fated Memories, Norn9, and some of Otomate's newer games.
I'm not a fan of Otomate's newer games with their outlandish storylines; I prefer the more slice-of-life ones.
But I actually really liked a lot of Otomate's older games…

Hakuoki and Code Realize.

For Hakuoki, I think it's because I expected a pure historical story, not something vampire-related. It's probably my fault for having those expectations before playing tho lol. Code Realize just isn't my cup of tea. I don't know if it's the art style or the writing, but it just didn't hook me enough.

I can't hype it up with my friend, but I can definitely lend an ear when she tell me about the game, collabs, or merch.

i think the one i feel the most prominently disconnected with is virche </3 for most people the despair aspect of it made the game feel memorable for them and helped connect with the characters but i dont know why i found it difficult to actually feel sad about everyone's circumstances which i think made the game miss its mark for me TT (iirc i only cried at one scene in the entire game ^^;;)
i found it to be a heavy storyline with compelling characters but i always feel that the way people praise it was very different from my experience with it TT like i think it's decent but thats it ^^;;

This reminds me of Code: Realize, a game that I actually loved very much at that time. Whether it was the world background setting, character images, or game storyline, it was very attractive and I was very interested. But after playing it, I couldn't immerse myself in the game and fell asleep while playing, it was very hypnotic haha.

Probably Code: Realize. 😭 I went into it with really high expectations because I'd read so many good things about the game, especially about Cardia as a protagonist. I was expecting to love it, so I think that made the disappointment even bigger when it just didn't click with me the way I hoped. 😢

might have mentioned this in another thread but for me that game was norn 9!! it's a shame bc most of the characters were good looking but idk... it just didn't really appeal to me, plus i wasn't a huge fan of the 3 mcs format

Most of the highly praised localized Otomate games that became popular in the west, honestly. Not all of them are bad games per se, but the writing quality has a lot to be desired. Olympia Soiree is one example where it could have used less flashbacks. I finished it 100% because I liked the side characters more.
