Tragic or Happy Ends in Otome—Which Team Are You On?

Most of the time, I still prefer good endings, but some characters feel like they can only find happiness in the bad ending.

One of the main purposes of playing an otome game is to reach a happy ending after going through many twists and turns. I welcome tragedy along the way, but if the ending ends in tragedy, it will be so sad that it will affect my real life. When I looked up at the beautiful blue sky and burst into tears, I was surprised at how much I got into it.

I've been like this ever since I first started playing games. I usually end up getting the bad ending first because I tend to think, "better to go through the sadness first and be happy later." Even now, I'm still like that. I also use guides when playing because if I don't, I almost always end up with a bad ending. Though sometimes I can kind of guess what's going to happen next, and it usually turns out exactly the way I expected.

I like happy ends, i will only give bad endings a go if it is necessary to unlock something or if a review said that it is really good.

Depends on the ending itself, though I feel like there's a lack of bad i.e. tragic endings in the industry as they usually leave to an abrupt end. Whereas happy endings allow you to continue with the route

When I was younger, I preferred warm and uplifting stories with happy endings. But as I've gotten older, I've found myself becoming more drawn to heavier and more emotionally intense stories.
These days, I really enjoy stories that explore darker themes or leave a strong emotional impact. There's just something memorable about a well-written tragic or bittersweet story that stays with me long after I've finished it.

I can take bittersweet or sad endings if the story is good, but it can never beat happy endings for me.
And I think there should always be happy ending route to heal my heart after seeing bad ending.

I always prefer happy endings.

If I spend all that time reaching the ending only for it to be a tragedy, it would make me too sad.

I definitely prefer happy endings because I want to see everyone happy, but I don't mind occasionally having some bittersweet endings like if it fits the theme of the game. I feel like for bittersweet endings there needs to be a fandisc or short episodes afterwards to make up for the bittersweet ending. As for tragic endings, I don't mind them as bad endings. Sometimes they can be done really well, will reveal some new info or show a different side to the LI (as long as they're not way too out of character).

I love to read realistic plots and seeing characters go through intense emotions. If the ending is happy or not isn't something I focus on. I want a story good enough to keep me on the edge of my seat. Sure, a happy ending after all the chaos is always welcome, but if it all ends in an emotional mess, I won't complain

I would think which ending make more senses based on the story. Sometime, Happy ending does not make sense because they just like everything resolved happy ever after. Sometime sad or bad ending make sense because the issues could be solved with character sacrifices. Sometime the plot could be make sense to resolve mystery. Then the characters able to solve together but still they cannot save all people. It need require another character to be a shield to protect and died can be good emotional story. I was crying in some ending that involve that kind of not everyone can be save.

Most of the times, I prefer good endings - though when I am in the mood for tragedies some bad endings can be really good too.

I usually like a happy ending, and a bad ending will make me cry. But I won't like a bad happy ending, and I will watch the good and bad ending in tears.

I lean more toward happy ends in Otome games, mostly because I enjoy seeing the characters' struggles pay off and the relationships reach a satisfying resolution. That said, I think tragic ends have their own appeal they can be powerful, memorable, and sometimes even more emotionally impactful. For me, it depends on the story: if the narrative builds toward healing and growth, I want that happy closure. But if the themes are darker or bittersweet, a tragic end can feel more authentic.

It depends on my mood but I think tragic endings have more impact.Imma say tragic endings.

SPOILER

I know you said otome but honorable mention, I still can't forget spirited away for example T_T

It depends on the ending—let me explain. For me, a happy ending is almost always the best choice, provided I like the character; it feels like a proper conclusion—a way of saying, "After all this suffering, we can finally be happy." I also like that such endings can often be viewed as the "true" ending. That said, there are tragic endings that leave you heartbroken yet feature great storytelling and plot twists, making them even more memorable than happy ones. Still, if I had to choose, I'd pick the happy ending every time; my heart just can't handle that much pain.

I like happy ending! Tragedi yaa sometimes I do want it but in the end prefer happy more. I don't wanna feel down a lot after playing the game haha

Team Happy Ends all the way! Real life is already exhausting enough, so when I play games, I just want a warm, comforting escape where the characters can love each other peacefully and get their well-deserved happy ending. Tragic ends can definitely leave a lingering, unforgettable impact, but it hurts my heart too much—I usually just check them out once for the completion and then run straight back to the Happy End to heal!
