t seems like BL games are gradually disappearing

Oh it's Alcot that shut down sorry about that! AliceSoft shifted to gacha, and they closed the official store down (with games being unavailable bc of that lol) for payment processor troubles
i got so concerned for a moment LMAO this sucks for overseas fans. i heard japan wants to establish their own payment processor that isnt visa/mastercard? hopefully they succeed. also hoping other countries follow suit
The CN market especially has been investing heavily, while some JP companies lost the timing on it :(
true. the problem is that jp gachage still follow an old formula without trying to improve, which ultimately leaves them behind. most top gacha are non-jp. hoyo is chinese, nikke and blue archive are korean. meanwhile jp has fgo (11 years of age) and umamusume (an enormous ip). i wish they figured something soon D:
payment processing has also been a huge pain on that front, so it's not looking too bright for major eroge releases tbh...
also true. saw news earlier today that watamari 2 has issues with funds, despite not even being eroge? but also, the biggest gaming store aka steam somehow allows rance and FUCKING BLACKSOULS games on there (granted, both are butchered, but you know)? while still censoring the shit out of most jp eroge releases, WHILE promoting ai porn slop on their home page. i genuinely dont understand what is happening with gaming these days

Actually, I don't think BL games are really disappearing. There are still developers working on them, and some projects are probably still in development or going through a lot of experimentation before they're ready to be released. We just don't get to see those projects yet. After all, I don't think any developer wants to put out a game that feels unfinished, buggy, or fails to live up to what they envisioned. So maybe it's less about BL games disappearing and more about the development process becoming quieter and less visible.

Hmm, I cannot say I have not seen such discussion, but do you think it is really the defining feature of the fujo community in general?
It's not - that poster just likes shitting on fujoshi for no reason.

I do think Japanese single-player BLVN big studios are falling. Not completely, but it seems there are fewer big releases than there were in the 2010s. Could be a combo of R18 and PC; could be that BLVN players just do not have enough purchasing power for a big company to survive. If you check out these filters, in comparison to otome games, it is just not as many https://vndb.org/v?q=&ch=&f=053gja184on3d
I've noticed that too. Fewer VNs from established developers and plenty of (typically short) games from no-name brands/people (I wonder whether using the term 'doujin' is appropriate if it's released by a company, no matter how small?). I also don't think it's the lack of PP, more like that power shifting towards other media... Maybe gacha is eating up all that spare time/money?

ok i'll shut up before this turns into a rant about how making a whole game about bro-play is not that interesting
No, please continue! So creators lurking here can learn! :smug: (Yep, I'll go with that 😼)

Big studios like Nitroplus moved on from eroge; their last title was Mojika I think? And Slow Damage seemed like a "final chapter" in their BL releases as well.
If that's true, then losing Nitro is such a huge blow. Moe VNs are aplenty, but seeing the niche of sick, dark stories getting even smaller hurts.
:aloprosen:
I read the recent interview with Gen Urobuchi (Saya no Uta author Gen Urobuchi thinks audiences no longer crave "poison" from fiction, but an "antidote" to reality) where he states that consumers these days no longer crave edgier content, everything has to be 'comfy' and escapist. We've entered some dark times of saccharine brainrot, I'm afraid.

I also feel that the number of new BL games is gradually decreasing. It's a real shame that new titles aren't released every year to begin with.

Now it's mostly remakes, sequels, short FDs, etc., of older titles, with varying quality and very few truly outstanding works.

I like the works of Spray, ADELTA, NITRO CHiRAL, and holicworks. Each has its own unique characteristics, and the stories and characters are quite interesting.

just because you dont see the discussion doesnt mean it doesnt exist!! just recently we got hit with utpr's anime anniversary art, and before that there was nippon sangoku, and before that there was grmn, all the while some random stuff about otome games got mixed in. im not shitting on fujoshi for no reason, im shitting on them because im frustrated with their actions (the actions in question are not supporting their own games and instead picking fights about otome contents)

While I don't 100% agree with you, I think I understand your point (y) They should support BL games more instead of trying to turn an otome game into bl. Even so, I respect the developers who want to mix both genres, but they should clearly state the genres beforehand in a tag so people who don't like BL aren't unpleasantly surprised.

yup exactly that!! i love both otome and bl, and i DO want more bl games, and i do my best to support upcoming releases, but not at the expense of otome!! its very painful to see something you love gradually losing fans and new content. weve been here with male-targeted eroge, with how many companies have shut down very recently, so i dont wanna experience this stuff again with another genre i love LOL

i do think it's not just BL games, but vns with +18 themes in general that seem to be disappearing. it feels like the market has changed a lot over the years especially with mobile games and gacha becoming so dominant. there are still plenty of BL and adult vns being made but they feel much more niche and harder to come across than they used to.

i also think a lot of developers have to be more careful about where and how they distribute these kinds of games nowadays which probably makes them less commercially appealing. personally i miss seeing more variety in vns especially when it comes to games that aren't afraid to explore more mature themes.

yeah. i just think they want to create bl games, but since yumejoshi bring in way more money, they instead pivot to creating otome with bl shit in it. happened with utpr, happened with kamigami no asobi (which is long forgotten and thank god for that). will probably happen with their licobits titles. so i have no trust in their future titles. also i saw a more knowledgeable japanese person saying that broccoli even sucks at creating danseimuke titles, so i just think they should stop creating games altogether..

I remember reading a post about utaprin that said it was originally an otome-like game but the game became popular and they gradually shifted towards a more BL content, I'm wondering which side is the truth lol

the first ever utpr game was an otome, and all the games that followed were otome as well. however, broccoli chose to listen to loud fujoshi (the ones that destroyed haruka merch and pressured artists to put trigger warning on haruka fanart), switching the genre from otome (gxb) to joseimuke (for women) with heavy bl pandering. their latest art in commemoration of the anime's anniversary (which was also bl heavy) was basically bl, which naturally led to original fans being angry at the company. even then, fujoshi had the audacity to blame these yumejoshi for being irrational, which naturally fueled the fire further. bear in mind that the grmn situation still lingers on everyones mind
also they were, and still kinda are, stalling the development of dolce vita, the latest otome game in the series (and i hope it will be their last personally), so when they were bullied into releasing more info, the promotional art didnt even feature haruka. the heroine. which naturally made people speculate that this is gonna be one of Those games

Oh, that's really terrible. It's one thing for a company to change its marketing strategy it's another when parts of the fandom start acting as though the original audience has no right to be there anymore.
I don't even have any personal attachment to UtaPri, yet I still find that disappointing. No fan should be treated like an outsider for liking the elements that were present from the very start of the franchise.

well, it wasnt their (broccoli's) first rodeo. kamigami no asobi was another blshit fest disguised as otome. broccoli as a whole sucks massively at writing otome games (and even danseimuke games, according to some people), seeing how most of their otome titles have low reviews. theyre one of those companies that rely heavily on pretty art by popular artists and huge seiyuu names (which checks out even with licobits, since they hired popular artists like hanamura mai, oyo, and riri aka piofiore artist), which is probably why they didnt even want to label jack jeanne as otome at first and were bullied into doing so. so even if licobits (their imprint) is doing fine in terms of games, its always good to keep your eyes peeled. just dont trust this company lolol

I dont play BL games, but I do think the industry is really slowing down. At this point, it's mostly indie games & nitro+chiral (which doesnt seem to be doing great)... Hopefully we get some more companies soon.

I'm hoping some wealthy Nucani girlies can give some fresh traction to Chiral with the upcoming collab... and even pave the way to bring some attention to other BL properties (Rakido Carnival when). Though I don't know just how much of the fanbases already overlap.

I do like my occasional joseimuke fujobait png multimedia project but not at the cost of letting actual BL die 💔

I don't know how well Parade is doing, but I do think it's cool of them to like, do their own Clockup-esque things at the risk of alienating some of their audience (though they do also draw in a diff crowd as compensation idk), and I'd like BL games to have enough support to continue to have variety like this

If I had the time I would honestly write an entire paper on how not only BL but all ero games are in decline.

Eroge market in general is kind of in shambles, gacha games ate up the PC market and BL was hit hard because it's harder for it as a genre to shift to mobile and portable market unlike Otoge due to prominent sexual content. Also have to consider, at least for the western side (and if recall correctly, it's starting to happen in japan too, but to a much lesser degree) we're in the middle of a reactionary censorship push by many, many payment processors that, while you could argue doesn't affect japanese games as much, DOES make many devs think twice about taking on making any kind of ero game, not only just in the BL genre, Galge, GL, 18+ Otome, Gay Games, etc. are all facing the same troubles. (esp w devs trying to capture the most amnt of people to get gacha like profit margins, which is just impossible since the gambling machine money goes brrr)

I can tell you as someone who has experience in selling adult art (drawing guys and gals going at it kept me afloat in the halcyon days of college o7) it is now harder than ever before to do so. On the flip side I think BL manga and drama are doing well, but I have noticed with the passing years they have become considerably tamer IMHO. Interesting titles do keep coming in the indie sphere tho, and honestly in the coming years or until the world pendulum swings back to "we're cool with sex in games again guys!" I think that's going to be the last standing front for BL games aside some standout bigger releases peppered here and there.

Looks like something happened with Nitro+Chiral yesterday. I think there was a livestream where they talked about DVDs and monetary issues, but I didn't get to see it.

Several posts like these just popped into my timeline on X. From what I've gathered, they don't have enough money now.

I saw someone said that N+C confirmed themselves that they would still be making BLVNs despite their hardships, so in the end it's not the end of the world...
But I do find it funny that people immediately jumped to blame pirates.

Afaik the company themselves never revealed the reason for their financial troubles. For anyone with any economics knowledge, you'd know that companies struggle because of various reasons. There could be many many people who have bought their games already, but we don't know HOW the company have been spending that money, where it's gone to during those years and what business decisions or wip projects they've scrapped in the shadows.

N+C was formed in 2004 and over the span of 22 years they actually haven't released that many unique games, not counting the fandiscs, remakes/ remasters. And remakes aren't free, they aren't 100% new products but they still cost money to make because programmers, artists and writers need to be paid for that extra content. But the company can only milk old titles for so long. There's a concept known as diminishing returns, at some point anyone who's interested in N+c games will have bought them, played from beginning to end already, you can't magically expect continuous profits to flood in from an old product. Releasing more merchs is an option, but merch also costs money to manufacture and they rely on an existing fanbase.

I've been playing BL games for several years and everyone I've talked to have bought and played N+c games. Their brand is famous within the industry. Truly, all their games have been milked enough. It's unreasonable to blame pirates for the problems of a company, I know from a company's POV pirates are annoying pests, but pirates are not strong enough to make or break a company :shockmenft:

I think both fans and devs of the genre have to come to terms with the fact that VNs is a niche, and BL games is a niche within a niche. The existing fanbase might continue playing BL games, or they might not and move on to other hobbies (also fans don't live forever, it's a bit sick to think about it but it's true...) so the industry is on a ticking clock to attract new fans. If they can't do that then the whole industry slowing down is inevitable.

It's not just BL games—visual novels in general seem to be going through a decline. Fewer of them are being released than in the past, whether they're aimed at men or women, and as someone who loves visual novels as a whole, it makes me really sad.
