yeah definitely, it super sucks. I'm not blaming people for not knowing, I wouldn't know either if it wasn't for this thread. I more just hope that if enough people talk about it that maybe they'll take it more seriously <//3

I remember Meiyou had a fantranslation on tumblr. Another option for those who still want to read his route translated in eng alongside the game.

Now I barley know Japanese just from anime and movies but based on what you translated the original
text, the MTL seems to have more faithful translation than the official one ,I translated this using gemini:

" If only this fear, if only this fear didn't exist! Didn't exist—!"

Of course it doesnt mean I encourage mtl , but this just shows me how bad the translation is .

Such a shame because I was excited for this game.

It's only a bad case of over-translation. I feel like often translators forget their role and think they're the authors so they create things up instead of staying faithful to the original, and it's especially true for entertainment (although still true for literature but it depends, I've seen some horrible shit lol). They basically try to imagine what the author meant and come up with something similar instead of doing an academic, 'cold' translation. Sometimes it does work, when the translator comes up with something the character would likely say, but more often than not, it has the opposite effect like here when there they made him say something he absolutely hates.

Yeah lol this one was wild haha
So imo the best case scenario with AI since ann10 talked about it is that translator students study with it, so they have the habit of staying much more faithful to the original. The problem with AI besides the fact that it's killing creative sectors' jobs, is that it's bad to recognize context (problems with pronouns or who does the action since Japanese doesn't always precise that) and also sometimes it uses recurrently the same phrasing (unless prompted to modify that) which can get boring to read. But as you showed it stays faithful. While the human translator's onlybig fault if they are competent is usually (usually.) the over-translation.

Now that you mention it , I remember Kara no Shoujo suffering the same issue, it was to the point that I installed a fan patch just to remove the random jokes added by Shiravune that didnt make any sense especially for a murder mystery.

What cooking bruh, they're high schoolers. Nobody's cooking anything for anyone. Plus some people may say that this translation is also misogynistic because it assumes the MC must have been the one who cooked whatever they're eating.

This whole conversation just doesn't make sense anyway. We must all return to monke™... Who even speaks like this???

I want to reply to the reddit threat where they ask for feedback (just hoping it might make some difference if more people know about it, even if it will probably do nothing, gotta have some hope). Would it be okay to put the 2 examples you said here as examples in my comment?
 
I've so far only made it into day 5 for Shiki and god damn the amount of 'But you said you wanna!' that appears during tense, silent moments is throwing me off so much. I'm so annoyed at this level of incompetence for a game that is supposed to be heavy and poetic.

I'm sticking to the Japanese version for now, that said I'm hopeful the typos and bugs in the English version will get fixed because those don't seem that difficult...

But I'm not sure about translation quality ever being changed. It depends a lot on the translator as well as the company's attitude. If they're one of those "localization is about adopting the text to fit the targeted language. A skilled translator shall take liberties to make the sentence flow naturally yadayada" then it's hopeless. I have seen many of those so-called "skilled translators" 😂 they will arrogantly yap about how big-brained and accurate their translation is. You cannot criticize them, cuz they will not listen, ever.

It's as daintylily said, most people who read the translated version have little knowledge of the original, and those who do know the original language have little reason to read the translation. Thus the localizers have little (probably zero) incentive to make it accurate or good.

It's tough being an English reader. On the Japanese side we've got: localization with too much freedom where the translators write for the author instead of translating, plus neutered versions of 18+ games. On the Chinese and Korean side we've got: outright unintelligible MTL, or translation made by someone who's very bad at English. Can't even pick a struggle 🥀

I bought this game and I would love to figure out how to remove the DRM. I want to be able to play this game through Gamehub or Winlator on my phone. I tried opening the startup exe but it didn't even open except on my Windows PC. I found the cracked version on Nyaa but the torrent stops at 0.3% and doesn't download further, and it's a zipped version so I can't grab just the exe. If I uploaded the game here, could anyone here help crack it? I sincerely hope someone here can help so I can play the game on the go. I hate that there are so many translation issues too, but at least it is in English finally. For now I'm reading it on my PC and via Steam Link on my phone...

...This is the type of mentality that allows companies to get away with this. I honestly don't know why someone would say this unless they don't care about any type of text they read at all and just want to say they've played the game... I truly wish people would start caring about quality and not just stay complacent.

They have a reddit thread where they're taking open suggestions about the translation. I feel that's a decent way to handle the situation, as long as they take the suggestions and change the game down the line with updates. I understand it would be awesome if they did a better job from the beginning, but I'm supportive of the devs attempting to release the game in English no matter what. By all means, anyone who isn't interested in the English version can learn Japanese and read that version. I'm still early in my Kanji learning so I don't feel confident enough yet to read a full VN, but that is always an option. I guess you'd prefer the game never be translated?

You get what you pay for when you hire someone. I have a feeling the translator wasn't paid a lot for this job. If the translation were fully MTL and unreadable, I'd maybe agree with that comparison, tho. As it stands, it's readable enough. I'm not a stickler for perfection, but I understand you are and others are too. I have read some MTLs that are so bad I didn't even know what was being said. I'm still happy I bought it, and I'm hoping for some updates that fix the translation errors. For the sake of everyone, hopefully the game gets cracked so I can play it on my phone as well. If you don't like the translation, just don't read it. Go read the Japanese version. I'm 100% happy with my purchase, knowing it will get more English translations out in the future, regardless of errors. Maybe if more people bought these games, they could pay the translators better and get a better translation.
