I really want to play some dark or horror otome games recently ww. The only ones I've played are Sweet Clown and Distortedcode. Does anyone have recommendations for similar otome games? 🥹

You probably already know of this, but there's Homicipher which definitely fits the description of a dark/horror game. But keep in mind that it isn't exactly like a traditional otome with full romantic routes (still romance though), and has point-and-click elements (alongside the normal ADV format) as well if you're okay with that.

Thanks for the recommendation! I've heard about this one! It sounds like the text-based puzzles are really interesting, www. I'll give it a try!

I can recommend Scarlet Hollow (not an otome perse, but has a diverse cast of lis). It's more like a detective story, but has very pretty visuals and revolves about a cursed town and a cursed family line. I would say that covers pretty well the dark and horror genre. But, it's very vast...like really vast in the choices you can decide for your gameplay, and the routes you can take on a single chapter and have massive consequences on the next one. Also, it's not finished. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1609230/Scarlet_Hollow/?l=

Speaking of Dark Otome, i'd suggest the "Demon Heart" Saga. Especially the first one https://store.steampowered.com/app/578900/Demonheart/?l=english.

Involves a kidnapped heroine, invoking a demon, and two morally cuestionable lis.

And, the one that comes to my mind for the horror otome genre is "A heart of butterblue" https://heiden.itch.io/a-heart-of-butterblue.

Involves a farm dynamic through the curse of the game, and has a day/night cycle for you to farm, explore the town, investigate the murder of your father and grandfather or pursue the three lis the game have.

Oh! I think you might not have heard of this one, but I love these games, I highly recommend Yotsume God -Reunion-. Another one I recommend is Sona-Nyl of the Violet Shadows. I think both fall into the category you're looking for and are available in English.

i'd recommend virche evermore for darker theme with a more angsty story and psychedelica of the black butterfly, where the protagonist is stuck in a mansion with other characters along with monsters! can't remember much from psychedelica in particular but, i consider it to have horror elements

There's a freeware doujin 猿の夢 or "Saru no Yume" that I really enjoy! Beware of the TW in the game description though, it got some really graphic depiction of gore and implied
noncon

For commercial games that haven't been recommended so far: It doesn't count as horror otome game but legit some OVER REQUIEMZ yamiochi routes got me jump on my seat, sometimes towards the love interests even.

all of agony/kinshiiku games are pretty dark!
and gracias/グラシアス has some otome, and all their games involve menhera (mentally unstable) characters in one way or another. though theyre mostly making yaoi games now, but still, worth checking out!
also, i think sekimori gami is pretty dark..? at the very least the r18 patch page says so w

i dont think its otome though? it is an eroge with a female protagonist, but it was never advertised as otome
Oh, really? I could have sworn that was an otome game! Maybe because it has a female protagonist? I played it a long time ago, and until now I thought it was a game for that audience.

How about "even if TEMPEST", although i havent played it but i heard it was a good game with dark theme ?

You can try some games developed by independent creators on itch, such as The Freak Circus, wh4t1w0uldntd0, big bad dogs, and so on. They are all free to play, but be sure to check the warnings before playing and make sure you are okay with them.

Lake of Voices on Itch.io, Black Wolves Saga~Bloody Nightmare, 9 R.I.P. and Bloodstained Flowers are pretty good!

I second the recommendation for Homicipher! I don't think there's anything else like it, and the whole figuring out the language hook really adds to the experience. OBSCURA (https://store.steampowered.com/app/2342920/OBSCURA/) is also a popular rec, but it's still incomplete. It's been years since I've played it, but I remember liking Dead Wishes (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1010970/Dead_Wishes/) as well.

Here's also some stuff that isn't otome, but might scratch the itch.
Chronicles of Taldun: The Remainder (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1616280/Chronicles_of_Taldun_The_Remainder/)
The Price Of Flesh (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1940040/The_Price_Of_Flesh/)
YKMET: Strade (https://store.steampowered.com/app/3515380/YKMET_Strade/)

I'm so glad to learn that there were more otome games with horror esque elements out there!

does 9 R.I.P on the nintendo switch classify as horror? I heard multiple people praising it for the plot!

Both of these are slightly brighter visually but they made me a bit tense in a good way while playing them. Maybe you'll like them.

Butterfly's Poison; Blood Chains

Virche Evermore -ErroR: Salvation-
