Set in 1956, *天城越え* follows the journey of a 14-year-old boy who runs away from home and crosses Amagi Pass. Along the way, he meets a traveling prostitute named Hana, who becomes his first love. When a drifter they encounter is later found murdered, Hana becomes the prime suspect. The boy is questioned by the police but refuses to betray her. Decades later, now a middle-aged printing shop owner named Jiro, he is visited by a retiring detective who asks him to print old investigation files. This act revives Jiro's suppressed memories, and with the statute of limitations expired, the truth behind the murder is finally revealed, leading to a poignant reunion between Jiro and Hana.
