MPC freezes when playing certain anime segments??

So I'm using Media Player Classic to watch Future Diary (and before that Another), and whenever there's a part in the episode where it's something in the past and the image is all sepia-like, the video and the subtitles completely freeze, the audio keeps going. I can't wrap my head around it, it's not that the computer is too slow (even though it's a bit older), since the rest of the episode runs fine. I did notice that I can go through the section if I constantly hold SPACE, constantly pausing and unpausing...

I did try other players KM, GOM, and they don't have the video freeze but they either have trouble with the subtitles or sounds or this or that...

Does anyone have any idea what could be the cause of this??

I think it might be styled subs causing problems. From my experience, in a different video - there was some translated text on a school chalkboard that caused video stuttering in MPC.

If we are having the same issue, I'd like to know a solution too for MPC other than disabling subs briefly or skipping the scene to avoid the freezing. (In VLC it plays fine).

I don't think it's the styled subs, they work fine in the rest of the video that doesn't have the sepia effect and disabling it doesn't help. Ill try VLC though.

Did you download 1080p video? maybe your computer can't handle it.

It is 1080p, but that shouldn't be the problem, for the computer is, I think, strong enough for 1080p (AMD5200+ dc, 2gb DDR2 ram, ATI 6850), and the rest of the video plays fine?? This is the part I really don't understand, it only freezes on the "past memory" parts where it has that sepia effect. The same happened in the other anime (Another), all fine except sepia parts?? Is is possible that part of the video gets increased bitrate or something so my computer struggles with it???

I don't think it's that strong enough tough:

but I could be wrong. Try downloading codec packs instead like KCP or CCCP. KCP has a predefined setting that works on slower computers.
If that didn't work, try a 720p copy, and if it works, then yeah..maybe your comp can't handle 1080p

Your problem is that your PC can't handle everything going on in the scene. The grain used in those scenes requires a lot more bitrate and rendering power.
Since libass-based players work "fine" (apart from rendering issues), upgrading the subtitle engine alone might suffice for you to play back things normally.
Get xy-VSFilter from here: https://code.google.com/p/xy-vsfilter/
Also, while you're at it, you might as well upgrade your splitter and decoders to (the latest version of) LAV: https://code.google.com/p/lavfilters/

If things run smoothly after the upgrades, you might as well try out madVR for optimal video quality (though it needs more resources than some other renderers - worth a try, though. ;) ): http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=146228

It'll probably freeze up for you in VLC too if its just a case of an underpowered pc.

(For my issue, it was just a minor thing, I went back and read comments on the subgroup website and someone posted some log showing it was missing fonts, that probably had some effect on it).

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

I tried the stuff you mentioned but it didn't seem to help.

What solved it in the end is changing the Output>Direct Show option in MPC, from Sync Renderer to Enhanced Video Renderer. There's a slight fps drop in the sepia scenes, but the scene runs through fine. Not sure if I got this option with some of the installs, or if it was changed by them, cause I think I already tried it before. It also runs with madVR, but I get a large fps drop throughout the video, so I'll have to go with EVR.

Anyway... thanks again all :)

I came late. There are settings for that which must be changed. The issue - I believe - was that your PC can't handle decoding the 1080p file but your GPU can help with the decoding process. The fact that you've changed the settings to EVR automatically places the video stream to your GPU for decoding. That helps bundles. You can see more in some other posts I made outside.

Original testing of this done by myself and Nomake Wan from IDW back in 2008.

Thanks for the response man. In the meantime I've bought a new computer so there's no longer a problem, but the links you posted could come in handy to others.

Thanks!
