LI that you thought you will like but did'nt

Ukyo from Amnesia. I love the characters style and look, and he was so eerie and interesting in all of the other routes! But when it came to his own the guy was so boring in comparison. Like I had hyped up this terrifying and sly character in my head that my MC would be playing mind games with, only to be given a sad wet cat instead. Then again, a lot of the LI's in secret routes seem to lack the hype they gave through the story,

Alfred from Mistonia's Hope. I was really looking forward to it but the story was really meh and I ended complaining so much about how this and that don't make sense and stuff. I end up semi-skipping it to the end just to get it over with.

Yang from Piofiore series, IT'S NOT THAT I HATE HIM OFC (sorry yang's lover) but since a lot of people been mentioning him as an interesting li and he's the reason i played it in the first place, im not really a fan of him cause of how he makes our mc feels restless of his constant unpredictable manner, in the end i fell in love with the charming nicola instead 🤍

Shion from VariBari and Toa from 7scarlet. Toa especially, his route was not at all what I expected! As for Shion, just thought it was boring, and he didn't match with Hibari (although I love his design, he's so pretty!)

futami from charade maniacs. his route started off pretty well but at some point i was like "is this it?" and just kinda soured my opinion on him. maybe the fandisc could salvage him for me but oh well... also benkei from birushana. the best thing about his route is that tomomori is so funny there

I don't dislike Hijikata Toshizou (from the Hakuoki franchise) as a character (i really do enjoy seeing him on screen), but i don't like him as a Li.

When i saw him in other routes (when i saw him in the cover of the game, he was the main reason i was interested in the game), he was cool, interesting, passionate, sometimes cold and to stuck on an idea but hey! It was part of his appeal that made me wanna play his route.

I felt a kinda whiplash when i started his route. I can't buy the idea that the cool Toshi i saw in other routes is the same Toshi acting as a Li...*sigh* that man sell me the idea that Chizuru (the MC) was a nuisance, sometimes a sister and ally...but most of the time, a nuisance ಥ_ಥ.

And that Kondou (his childhood best friend) was the most important person in this world to protect and care (and i do understand that part... but... Am i supposed to like a Li that shows more love to his comrades than the MC?) X_X

Kyou from Kintouka. He started so cute in the common route and at the start of his route but then he became an entitled and even r*pey asshole towards the protagonist so now I despise him the most from all the routes I've played (which I dropped shortly after his second H scene).

usually i don't have any expectations towards LIs, because you'll never know, right?
but recently, when i was playing The Red Bell's Lament, i was sure i'm definitely going to like Ciaran, cause visually i thought he was really fine...
don't get me wrong, i don't hate him, he's good enough, just not my thing
instead, Garrett has become my main LI for that game, even though i didn't like him much at first. he was that stiff guy and wasn't really a pleasant one to talk to at first. but then they opened him up a bit with all those small interactions and yeah, it was love. definitely not at first sight :sneaky:

Steam Prison Fin Route. I liked him in main game but was boring and dissapointed in his route. Also i had some tech problems like in middle of game mouse so slow and i can't save/load normal.

ahhhh... when i played it on psp, his route felt like just another common route... right until the end where the writer must have thought something like "oh, right! he's the love intererst too!!! quick! i need to add romance!!!"

Jihae from Dandelion. He looked good and had that gentle, serious vibe. But his dynamic with other LIs and how he behaved at the end was just...not it

Probably Shin from Amnesia , i liked his design but i'm not into young tsundere° like Ryuki from Cupid Parasite par exemple

Rei from Slow Damage didn't meet my expectations at all, to put it lightly. I expected the exact opposite of what I got, especially since I liked him much more before he "changed" to become who he supposedly is in his good ending. He had so much potential, but he ended up being so tropey that I felt deeply disappointed in both his route and his character. Maybe it was my fault for not seeing it coming, but whatever.

SPOILERS OF HIS WHOLE ROUTE: Rei was such a sweet and caring person at the beginning, always there for Towa and having openly queer friends whom he stood up for. That remains the same, but the main plot of his arc involves him being pushed into femininity because he's gay, under the logic that it's "more accepted." Consequently, he feels he has to hide his "masculinity," which is represented by a craving for violence in an illegal fighting ring. I found this part of his story tropey and unrealistic, perhaps due to my perspective as a Western LGBT+ person.

RANT RELATED TO SPOILERS: I don't know why Japanese media tends to portray feminine gay men as being more accepted by their families and friends than masculine gay men. I'm not a gay Japanese man, but is that really a "thing"? From a Western POV, it's often the opposite; feminine gay men frequently face discrimination even within the LGBT+ community. However, Japanese media often makes it look like femininity is the "acceptable" way to be gay. Given the existence of the Bara genre, which celebrates muscular, "bear," and hyper-masculine men, and the fact that many masculine Japanese gay men look down on BL for its overly effeminate character designs, this trope feels completely detached from reality. The idea that femininity makes a gay man more "acceptable" creates a sense of cognitive dissonance for me, especially since the rejection of feminine traits and hobbies is so widespread globally. I am open to being proven wrong if this is a specific cultural nuance I'm missing. I realize that "soft masculinity" is more mainstream in Japanese pop culture (seen in Johnny's idols or bishonen characters), but I haven't seen any evidence that this translates into a smoother lived experience for actual gay men in Japan. If anyone has deeper insight into this cultural divide, I'd love to hear it.

Yang unfortunately- he seemed exactly my type so I was positive I'd love him. But I somehow ended up falling hard for Nicola and Henri instead- I don't hate Yang tho, I still find him interesting! I'm just not into him lol Tho I haven't played the sequel yet so idk if that'll change things

I usually like childhood friends to lovers trope. so i expected i would kinda like Shungen "Birushana" but i ended up hating him
If Shungen has no haters. i'm dead

Taiga from Variable Barricade for me. I found his banter and dynamic with Hibari pretty fun, but man, the "all men are wolves grrr be afraid of me grr" trope is an instant dealbreaker for me.

Mineo in Collar x Malice, during the common route, he was portrayed as a comedic character, but once the game progressed to the his route, he became serious and lost his humor, which I found sometime boring
