What bugs me is I see so many Sinophobic comments due to this. You're playing a Chinese game made by Chinese people yet every time a controversy happens, the first thing you do is shit on the entire Chinese community?
Yeah, even outside LADs, I noticed that everytime a controversy for a gacha game happens in China, outsiders think they're being entitled shits hive mind for shallow reasons without researching why they're mad.
Like with Reverse 1999, they simplified the situation to "they're mad about Rhiannon because they don't like her design!" And it turns out that they're mad about other things such as how the character was handled, the insane powercreep, that more of the livestreams are about merch rather than the game itself, etc. CN players want to fight for the game get better and then outsiders think they're being entitled and that the poor indie (/s) company should be defended??? No wonder why none of their boycotts succeeded.
Those two issues are very much real in China but I've seen enough of people on the other side of the globe downplaying it like it's nothingburger. If you can't bother trying to understand the culture where the game comes from, please stick to playing only Western games for the rest of your life. It's giving "I listen to K-pop and worship K-pop idols but I look down on Koreans."
I've seen people criticized some medias (such as YIIK: A Post-Modern RPG) for referencing or having similiarities to real-life tragedies so it confuses me when they downplay this one and say "But it's not one to one!" and "It's just a coincidence!"
And they don't realize that the experiment severe enough to the point where BNHA got banned in China for indrectly referencing both the number and experiment. The knowledge on the internet is vast enough that they can research on the internet to understand why it's so serious without people having to tell them on social media. However, most people don't like to read and learn nowadays and want to be spoonfed information.
And I really, really hate that so much focus in on the "Valko is for the gays" comments. Such comments exist, but why are we cherry-picking instead of looking at the whole picture? People only use those comments to laugh at LADS fans and disregard valid complaints, I'm baffled to see fans siding with that group of people, because tbfh in their eyes you're a clown too. Why don't they force BL into eroge and the men's gacha, but us otome players need to welcome BL ships or tolerate the idea of anything BL-related in our games? Don't get me started on the "Valko is the only manly guy, the rest look gay" comments, and the so-called LADS fans who cheer for those
They always think it's so easy to fight and bully women, people don't like it when they have things on their own. Nothing's stopping them from playing otome games and it's certainly something when they want to basically sideline or even erase women characters. And they all think "otome" is a catch-all term for romance when it's not. Like, there's other games and genres that would appeal to them yet they do this.
And, ngl, I always found these kind of comments honestly to be homophobic and it annoys me that they say this about any bishounen and ikeman character in general. I really don't like people who go "I need characters to be manly men with beards and muscles because these characters don't look like men!" as a result.
Social media is becoming more and more intolerable recently. I thought r/otomegames was a safe space, but I notice certain gacha players permanently camping there now. I recognize their usernames because in every other gacha sub they call otome players and whole Chinese population homophobic at every chance they get.
Yeah, I was in a subreddit for a completely different game with a completely different genre and thought it would be safe. Saw people mocking the situation and spreading misinformation. I tried to tell them that they're being misinformed and that this didn't happen because they were parasocial crazies and tried to point out how severe the number is. Got downvoted by a hell lot.
A person told me "well, I understand the tragedy and why they're upset, but it's not really misinformation since they're parasocial crazies." Some other dude who commented linked me a twitter post that shows comments from XHS from four randm players as "evidence". I called the person out for believing in random social media posts with no believable source. Got downvoted while this dude got upvotes.
ATP, I do my hobbies, and downloaded browser extensions to filter out and hide posts from social media lol
