Is there a trope that never works for you?

I wouldn't say never but one trope that rarely works for me is the childhood friend trope. I usually find the childhood friend LI annoying and way too overprotective when MC gets near other guys. If both of those qualities were toned down a bit I probably wouldn't find them as annoying lol. Another trope I don't like as when the LI sees the MC as a replacement. I don't like how a majority of the route is spent on both the MC and LI figuring out if he likes her for who she is or she's just as a replacement.

and i'd like to add another one - the whole "you'd be better without me" stuff. come on dude who tf u are to decide what's better for MC? you're not them, don't make a descision for another person when no one ask
GOD that's so bad. I hate it, and I hate even more how common this trope is.

Producers, let the MC be unhinged, please. They don't need to be so coddled, much less when they're capable and can think by themselves.

Oh man. Looking at the replies, I have more tropes that i don't like that i would've thought lmao

ntr, carrot and stick love interests, step siblings, miscommunication..... i wouldn't necessarily outright stop playing a game if a route does have one of these, but i get seriously irritated lmao
So true, lol

As for the protagonist, they're the type who refuses to listen to anyone around them, goes off the rails, and ends up causing their own downfall (like getting captured by the enemy) (^-^;
It gets pretty frustrating to play as them.

As for the love interest, he's someone who is overly protective to the point where he won't tell you anything, and he takes self-sacrifice to the extreme.

I suppose that's sometimes unavoidable depending on the story, though.

Also—and this is probably true for a lot of people—there's the issue of the age gap (an adult with a minor). The wider the gap, the more... (;'∀')

I appreciate love stories where feelings develop gradually, day by day, and I dislike stories of playboys who play games, one-night stands, or relationships built on transactions and mutual exploitation. If the romance progresses too quickly without in-depth description of details or the crucial moments and processes that truly lead the protagonists to decide to be together, the story becomes dull and fails to resonate with the reader. This makes it difficult for me to continue playing.

Oh I absolutely hateeeeee the trope of the MC being completely in love with the LI since childhood but the LI doesn't reciprocate, pushes her away and mistreats her. And when the FL finally moves on the LI all of a sudden realizes that he misses her and wants her back 🙄. Like I have too much self respect to ever forgive that type of man and it pisses me off when the MC accepts them back just because they "apologized" and repented.

Love Triangles.

I used this term since it's a lot more recognizable, but I personally prefer to call it Love Angles.

It's when there's two characters are attracted or chasing after one character. Let's say A and B likes C, and C likes both of them.

I only like Love Angles if C doesn't care for either of them AT ALL, or if either A or B finds someone else to be with so C can end up with someone as long as they're able to accept the loss.

I'm not a fan of all the messy stuff that Love Angles have; why don't all three just get together and have a healthy relationship?

But, alas. Such a thing is a rare occurrence.

Two people keep misunderstanding each other but never bother to clear things up, only to regret it and finally realize the truth at the very end. I think that's just the writers having nothing else to write about and padding the story.:alice_nay:
OMG I'M quite agree with this oneee fr

Love at first sight, childhood friends, the LI mistreating the MC...

Love at first sight makes no sense; you barely interact with the person and you're already in love? Seriously? Blushing and having your heart race over so little? Without really knowing anything about them? It's so tedious...

As for childhood friends: if they were raised together and did everything together, practically growing up like siblings, constantly visiting each other's homes and the like... well, that just seems weird to me.

And regarding mistreatment, I'm talking about the love interest who's a "bad boy," acting "cool" and treating the MC poorly, all while flirting with other girls and making the MC feel insecure about herself. That trope is so common in otome games that it's actually annoying🫩 I can't stand otome games that feature a love interest like that! Yet the vast majority of games always have one (and he ends up being the most prominent and famous LI in the game, ugh. I don't get what people see in a love interest like that).

TOO MUCH SELF RESPECT LMAO but thats so true tho

if they're just gonna treat the mc like sht, just.... idk, not make a move at all? gosh, people would think that they hate them, and what for? some petty reason, probably.

as for the mc, PLEASE don't just shove everything under the carpet and treat as if everything is ok?? lets all talk like adults? (well, even if some of them are underage, but the point is there)

Amnesia that happens in the middle of story, where MC forgets everything about LI, and then it magically cures itself. It's just feels like rereading the same story with the only change that LI cares about MC now.

May be a hot take cuz this trope is really popular and liked but i always skip the yandere tropes…idk it's kinda making me uncomfortable…I MEAN IDM CHARACTERS THAT ARE OBSESSED…but overly obsessed and dependent of the heroine to the point bro could kill somebody or cage her up…noup…

Exactly! And then they act hurt cause they think the MC betrayed them 🙄. Or they think the MC is just playing pretend to get their attention.

For me, maybe it's the 'hero saves the beauty' type of plot? Every time I see the black screen closing-eye scene at moments like this, I always make fun of it. After all, in most cases I can predict what happens next, so there's no freshness in the storyline.

Step siblings for use, and maybe even childhood friends trope. And that childhood friend always has locked route and he always loved MC or have some kind deep secret blah blah ahhh ok no, tired of this.
