I've been trying to compare two populations http://www.mpaa.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/MPAA-Theatrical-Market-Statistics-2013_032514-v2.pdf (Im using data on pg 18 on the pdf link) for the goal of making various conclusions about the Movie-goer populations in American states (like "Thru comparison of xx state to zz state, it can be concluded that the most number of ticker-buyers are in xx state.)

Problem is that I want to compare these populations using mathematical formulas (complex I kno)

A friend told me to try using a "Comparison of Means,"Hypothesis Test for a Population Proportion", and a "z-test for proportions" , but I don't get what that is? Someone tell how to use these concepts for comparing stats? or link me to an explanation that explains how to use those quotations I mentioned in the manner I'm searching for...

So why, then, does it feel so unbearably sad?
