Well, after playing several newly released otome games, a friend recommended Hakuouki to me—a game that, honestly, didn't excite me at first because the sheer amount of content was a bit intimidating. Plus, I'd never really engaged with this type of historical setting—specifically the story of the Shinsengumi; the closest I'd ever come was *Samurai X* (Rurouni Kenshin), which I hadn't even finished.
With a friend joining me on my journey to learn more about Hakuouki, I've managed to complete 6 routes so far. But I've noticed that, unlike on Reddit, there aren't really any dedicated threads here for specific games!
So far, I've played the routes for Kazama Chikage, Hijikata Toshizou, Heisuke Toudou, Okita Souji, Saitou Hajime, and Yamazaki Susumu. My personal order of preference at the moment goes like this: Heisuke > Kazama > Hijikata > Okita > Yamazaki >>>>> Saito
Of the remaining routes, which ones would you say are absolute must-plays?
What was your experience like when you first started playing Hakuouki? I had to ask my friend for help more than once, look things up online about the Shinsengumi, and take frequent breaks—there's just so much information, and I was completely lost at times (but it was totally worth it!).
