Getting Soukan Yuugi to run

I've downloaded from here (a reliable uploader) and a few other spots the game Soukn Yuugi, by Black Rainbow. every version seems to have the same issue, after the Disc is mounted, when I try to turn the game on, the computer hesitates for a moment, then nothing. Even with Task Manager open, there's no hint of activity. behind the scenes

Only when I try using Locale Emulator, the windows & icons zoom in briefly, then a file such as "soukan.1DCE71D78201DA6.crash.dmp" appears in the game folder

Trying to use Compatibility Mode Windows XP SP 2 does nothing either

So, i want to know, using a window 10, do I need a proper install of the game? Install in the Right Folder? If i messed up the Install, must I find way to Uninstall out of C: Games. Or worst, do I need a VM for Windows XP SP2? (the Overflow Radish Games apparently need VM mode too)

Or has someone made a crack so the game is playable? Once the Game works, I can start its translation

I tried the one from this thread https://www.anime-sharing.com/threads/相姦遊戯.891701/ where a user specifically asked for the version with "w8+ compatibility". The gdrive link is still up.

Apparently there was newer release that runs on more modern versions of Windows somewhere around 2016. Here is the VNDB link to the release
https://vndb.org/r43689

I tested it on Windows 10 x64 and found it working both with Japanese locale and with with Locale Emulator.

Didn't have to install it, I just copied the contents from "program files" inside the drive (the BLACKRAINBOW folder) to the desktop and ran the exe. Doesn't look like a crack is necessary.

Maybe you can try this version and see if it works for you.

Thx. That Poster hasn't been seen for a couple years & only has about 50 likes in 100 posts.

I'll trust if if you do.

Before I try it, can i just delete the contents of the Soukan Yuugi Folder in the Games Folder in C:? or use the earlier disc to run uninstall?

I would uninstall first, but it shouldn't really matter. The installer just copies over the files from what I can tell.

You can never be 100% sure, but I would say this is as close as it gets:
Respectable account, multiple people came back to like the comment, unchanged upload from 2019 (you can see that in gdrive), disc image and not just files, time stamps from the files in the disc image also match the release date.

If you want more than that I recommend setting up a virtual machine to play VNs.

Thx for that! I really wanted to play that game so I'm stoked to have a working version!

Since this was solved, if I have another Game I can't troubleshoot, should I post it here, or start a new thread? Most of the games on this site I can get to work w/ Little to No Trouble, only a few w/ MASSIVE Trouble.

I found a new artist,

毛玉キューブ

, makes RPG maker games

downloaded this one:

https://www.anime-sharing.com/threads/210908-毛玉キューブ-リリアの咲く季節-rj337955-ver1-20.1460774/

but despite it being RPG maker, it refuses to run I get:

when I unzip it, then unzip the next part, the folder is labeled "A̍炭Gv1.20" is there a way to unzip it so it doesn't do that?

also, I can't get the game to work, even running in locale, it gives: Loading Error Failed to load: img/characters@バリー青年.png

trying to access Options gives: Loading Error Failed to load: img/characters@メニュー.png

I downloaded from another thread, had same problems. I don't know if the issue is Specific to "Ver. 1.20" or if the earliest version also had it.

You will have to first set your system locale to Japanese, extract the game, then you can play it. By the way, this doesn't change your Windows UI language, but will fix a lot of future problems like this.

Usually you can circumvent doing this by running the game via Locale Emulator but not with this game, since the problem lies with extracting the files.

In case your locale is already set to Japanese, check if you enabled "Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support". Having it enabled also leads to the behavior you described. The setting has to be turned off.

As you noticed yourself, the folder name gets all messed up when you extract the archive. But it's not only the folder, it is also a lot of the file names themselves (take a look into "www\img\pictures" for example). This is why the game can't find the images it needs.

Here is where the setting is located in Windows 10, it should be identical to Windows 11. Otherwise you might have to google yourself.

For each game you have problems with I would recommend starting another thread. This should make it easier to find via search if someone else encounters the same problem in the future.
