General BL Games Discussion Thread

So, it's been a little while since there was an update regarding new and upcoming games and things. I'm not very up to date on the Japanese devs stuff, but here's some stuff for people to (maybe) look forward to.

Also, please note I did include a couple of games that are BYOG (bring-your-own-gender) as long as they have male love interests, which can technically be played as bl or otome depending on the gender you pick.

RELEASED

UPCOMING

Also, it was mentioned earlier as a concept, but I do keep an excel spreadsheet for myself for LGBTQ+ in videogames. I originally made it because it was something I wanted and I couldn't really find... especially not one that kept track of the specific data I was after. Anyway, not sure if that's something there's an interest for here, but I don't mind sharing.
WOO thank you for the list !!! i find it hard to keep track of these kinda things so this really helps with the excitement !
a spreadsheet would be soooo nice to have but feels tough to keep it updated as a one man job ; ; otsu wildly

RIGHT the amount of passion this emanates has been so heartwarming...Like a dream come true for both the fans and the devs. I've always gotten dmmd vibes from the Elysium event story so I'm glad Olivine gets to be a pervert in a strange city again. The character interactions have been so fun and they even threw Mizuki enjoyers a bone with the overworld segment. Also I'm a Blade (and Clear, ofc) oshi so hearing "Culili" for the first time was like everything to me...

I didn't really have anything saved, so didn't get Aoba but got an Eiden! I've heard his intimacy rooms are pretty good and out there in terms of story so I'm looking forward to reading it when I unlock them all (it's taking a while rip...)

Hello ~
May Anyone With A Pretty Good Grasp Of JP Could Tell Me How Is The Manga Adaptation Of OOE Is So Far Compared To The Original Please ?
I Am Playing The Game On And Off , But Due To My Low Proficiency I Would Like To Solicit Some Advice From The More Experienced !

I Like Reading Manga Adaptations Of VNs If I Like Them Plus If The Adaptation Was Well Done ( EX : Umineko )
My Personal Opinion Is That Although The Art Is Nice , I Think It Lacks The Atmosphere The Games Writing Did ~

Found this in my Steamfeed today. First I'm hearing about it coming out, mid-November:

They have plenty of games with uncensored boobs, it's only fair that we have something to look at, too  I'm also waiting for this one. Didn't have a chance to play online version, wonder if they'll have event stories included, or it'll be main story only

I guess it's more that Steam is so inconsistent with what is allowed and what isn't. I've commented on this before, but like:

  • Dramatical Murder (Nitro+CHIRal / JAST) - only sold on Steam censored, so you have to go buy their uncensored patch on JAST's website.
  • The Symbiant (HeartCoreDev) - sold on Steam censored, but you can literally download the uncensored patch through the Steam page as DLC.
  • Love Love Sexy Salaryman (MADA Labo / MangaGamer) - sold on Steam censored, and you have to go buy the uncensored patch on MangaGamer's website.
  • LuckyDog1 (tennenouji / MangaGamer) - sold on Steam completely uncensored, no patch needed.
  • Norn's Dine (HIC*) - sold on Steam censored, and no uncensored patch available anywhere, despite the fact that you can buy it uncensored on Erolabs site.

And then they don't even allow a game like *This Game is Not Real to be RELEASED on Steam.

There are games that censor, games that don't censor, games that censor with a patch available elsewhere, games that censor with a patch available on Steam. Don't even get me started on the hentai content.

There is no consistency or reason and it honestly drives me nuts because it's not that they have rules that I dislike... it's that they make up rules based on, I dunno, freaking moon signs and smoke signals, dependent entirely on who is interpreting them. (And then they flip a coin just because... 😭 )

It does sound strange, but at the same time I'm pretty sure there are times when it's not the Steam decision, but more developers and/or publishers choices. Some games are ports from consoles, therefore they are censored, like Nie no machi (it's a long talk about this game alone, it's a wild thing they did with it).

Sometimes it's a "censor just in case" like a modern custom to write the words like "rape" in strange ways (what is a "grape" 😭) even where it's not prohibited. It recently was done with blood in Japanese version of Blood of the Dawnwalker, and there was a huge backlash for needless censorship, but it wasn't Steam who implemented it, it was publisher, I think.

And sometimes, like with This Game is not Real it's indeed Steam's fault.

And I just want to see pretty dicks and manly boobs in all their glory 😔

I've personally given up on trying to wrap my head around Steam's rules regarding NSFW content because at this point, it all sounds very wishy-washy. At that point I'd rather buy my games from other platforms if they're available there since it's more straightforward. Hearing about a BL game being on the platform in the first place seems like a win since it means more eyes could potentially set on it, though kind of half-hearted considering some of the loops involved in some games' release. :(

And I wish there wasn't this urge to have censorship "just in case," if hurting the sensibility of people is the issue this is what the description page of a game should be for; if you read that the game has content you're not chill with, step away from it.

Then again, it's not a guarantee that content will be appropriately tagged in the first place, or that people actually read those properly before hitting that purchase button.

First up, thank you for the reply. I get long-winded debating this kind of stuff, so I'll apologize in advance.

Nei no Machi isn't on my list of confusion and complaint for that specific reason - there is no uncensored patch anywhere because the publisher doesn't put out uncensored games. I am very well aware of the digital hoops they jumped through for the consensual peens (but hey, you can keep that non-con scene pretty much uncensored, it's FINE).

Ahem. :cautious: Anyway, I'm not going to put the blame for that game at Steam's feet.

I won't rule out the possibility that some of the issue DOES come from the devs/publishers on the games I listed off, but I'm kinda leaning more toward "this is Steam's fault" because of the inconsistency of how games are handled even within a single publisher. MangaGamer has no problem providing uncensored patches for free on their site, and while Patient S Remedy was censored on Steam, Lucky Dog 1 - with its arguably more extreme endings - was not.

MangaGamer didn't even release the sequel to Naked Butlers on Steam - even though the original IS there. I can't imagine any reason a publisher doesn't want to advertise and sell the sequel on all platforms that the original is available on in the hopes of increasing awareness and their sales, which makes me think Steam potentially said no based on the content for reasons beyond understanding.

I also can't imagine why a developer like Jast wouldn't make the 18+ DLC patches available on Steam directly - the likelihood of selling them there is higher to the newbie fujo or fudan who picked up baby's first Dramatical Murder there, at least more so than not having them there and said fujo/fudan realizing that 1) an 18+ patch exists, and 2) scooting over to Jast's website to find it and purchase it.

If you buy the game on Jast, they only sell an uncensored version. The patch specifically states it's for the Steam version... even though it isn't available anywhere on Steam itself. That's what leads me to think Steam said no, you can't sell it here.

But then, THAT leads me to ask, well, why CAN HeartCoreDev offer their FREE 18+ DLC right on the same page as their game?

😭 And so I come full circle to my original thought. The person who makes the decision is sitting at a desk somewhere, flipping a coin. "Heads. Yeah, okay, let that one through. Nope, they don't have to censor the peens." "Nope, nope, tails. That one doesn't pass, better luck next time!"

edit: some of my grammar was borked at 2AM, whoops

Thank you for clarification!

I used Nie no Machi, because instead of already existing and perfectly working PC version with 18+ scenes, they sell a reverse-port from consoles, with deleted 18+ scenes, so it was an example of sellers fault. It wasn't because of blurred images, I know that all Japanese games have to do that because of Japanese porn law. So I do have a complain with them, how could they sell an sfw game with story, where at least half of everything is based on nsfw :cautious:

But eh, no matter who is at fault, I'd like to see more BL games on Steam, as it's my main platform.

I'm with you there. Steam is a convenient place to purchase games and keep a full library. I do think they're getting a bit better as time goes on, but their approval process still leaves something to be desired. (I'm going to be bitter about *This Game is Not Real until the end of time... I'm glad it found a home on Jast, at least).

I also wince every time I look at Nie no Machi. And not just because of the $60 price tag they put on it after they butchered it :cautious:

Any SensUltra players here worried about their recent announcement to temporarily stop releasing new events? The game has been out for how long, three months? What can they even re-run, we had two events so far and we're already basically getting maintenance mode. I doubt whatever minor events they plan to add will make up for it (I bet they will be like the birthday ones, more or less). This is bad, I smell EoS within one year at best.

They aren't going to eos—I read the developer's letter. They're going to suspend the events while they fix and optimize the game. After all, what's the point of fixing a game if you're just going to eos after? 🤔

Plus, the quality is incredible and they don't use AI; it helps me progress in other games.

I mean, you're right about them not EoSing now, but needing to do a "major rework" after a beta period (and if I remember right, even two of them!) and a measly few months of live service is a huge red flag. I wouldn't be surprised if this goes awry for them unless they find a good way to monetize the game in the meantime. I'm a free player this time so whatever happens, I'll be happy to just hitch a ride however long it lasts, but it's not normal for a gacha game to do this. The betas were a better time for big changes, doing this now is just so risky that it reads as kinda desperate to me, you know? If any game where I regularly spend money did this, this one move would make me wait and see what happens next before spending again.
After all, what's the point of fixing a game if you're just going to eos after?
There is no point in this, but this is how it can go if they go two months without major events, which is what they are about to do ;P So to sum up, of course I hope everything works out because I like SensUltra a lot, but in my humble opinion, this announcement is bad news. Wishing the devs a smooth landing though. (One more thing, I don't mean to imply they will EoS after exactly two months, just that things could easily go downhill from there if they aren't very careful.)

This is not good news, but this is not necessarily bad news. It's mostly neutral statement. Right now another big BL game is going out, they won't lose much by staying away for these two months, as they would suffer profits anyway. If anything, it's a good time for them to wait out. At least that's how I see it.

I like story and the main character, and hope they will live a long online life 🙏 Same goes for Godly Love on Air - the more ikemen there are, the better
