First-route syndrome

Have you ever noticed that the guy whose route you completed first in the game remains your "canon" husband forever, while relationships with others seem almost like cheating? This happened to me often.
It depends on the game. Sometimes I happen to pick my favorite on the first try and in that case, yes. But sometimes a game has routes that are all amazing and I cannot choose (or cannot choose between 2-3 of them).

In a lot of games, I usually do the 'recommended' order, so thinking my first finished route as the MC's 'canon' husband rarely happens, especially because I'm the type who likes to save the best for last. haha. And there're games that lock the 'main' or kinda 'canon' LI, so yeah. I almost never play the ones I'm most interested in first.

Exception happens if I only play the route/s I'm interested in and not do all the routes.

For me, oftentimes I just get the usual 'your fav is locked behind the entire cast' syndrome so, as others mentioned, I tend to... maybe enjoy the other routes a bit but then it's a waiting room till I get to The Man:tm:. (╥﹏╥)
I honestly just treat all of the routes as self-contained stories. More of a 'what-if' kind of universe, so I don't feel bad or anything if the MC is with another man. As for whether a particular route is plausible is another story entirely, but... that's usually what true routes are about (but there are exceptions to this, of course...).

With Virche (that I am currently playing), there's been characters that definitely grew on me, so I'm curious about what I'll think at the end of the game. (。- .•)

I want to do the LI I'm most interested in first to experience all my 'first's with him. Sometimes OTP is locked behind other story routes we get forced to complete first. Gotta pretend multi-universe timeline for each ones played; like mentioned here, haha. I used to play the least likely romance comparability first so I'd have my fav LI to look forward to and get through the repeat story again but it gets tiring quickly with feeling disengagement throughout playthrough.

Not really. Sure I do have favorite character, but I don't see them as being "cheated on" or anything like that. Playing different routes let you get deep to each character's story and learn more about them, isn't that the whole point of playing otome game?

Yes. Always like this and first route very important for me. That's why i choose to play most interesting route first. Locked routes is pain :(

I actually find I usually like the second character I play best.

The first playthrough usually goes back and forth between introducing all the characters / exposition about the main plot / and then romance. The second playthrough I can skip past all the other parts and just do the romance.

Obviously if the game has a locked order you have to play in then... yeah... it's not cheating if you made me do it, game!!!

Not really. I do have a main favourite in each game I play, but playing other routes never made me feel like I'm cheating now that I think about it (this might be a problem hahah). I either think of other routes as like 'in another universe,' or, I self-insert in my fave's route and not in the others so it's like, the LI x Heroine, which wouldn't involve me.

Oh dear, I know exactly what you mean! Especially if the character's story is very well written. When I find a guy like that in a game, sometimes that makes me lose interest in the others and I'll just straight up ditch 'em.

That doesn't really happen to me, as I'll play the route I'm least interested in first! It's very rare for the first LI to by favorite. In games with recommended route order, it will also be more of an introductory route, so I don't get too invested in the LI

If the first character I complete ends up being someone I especially love, then yes, that can happen. But it's not very common for me. I often end up liking characters I play later just as much, and sometimes I even like them more than the first one.
