Do you prefer playing with MC illustration on or off?

I think it depends.

Sometimes, the game relies on the MC's expression to further the dialogue rather than write for MC, if you get what I mean.

Personally, I like a pretty MC art and will keep it on even though I self-insert.

Although, as others said, there's sometimes a really obnoxious MC where having them on my screen 24/7 is a curse and I turn it off. (⁠◕⁠ᴗ⁠◕⁠✿⁠)

She's part of the beautiful artwork — her expressions, her interactions with the love interests, and especially the CGs look more complete with her visible.
Turning her off would feel like I'm missing half the illustration.

I leave it on; I don't see myself immersed in this world as such. I see the protagonist as just another character, so when that option isn't available, I abandon the game. It's like giving me a faceless character.

I don't particularly feel strongly about the presence of an MC portrait, so I usually just set it to whatever is the default (which is generally on if they are present). Though I will admit that sometimes when the MC is more "present" or proactive I do wish that more games would go the full 9 yards and have the MC be voiced as well. But I get that that's because I don't really self insert at all.

Most of the time I leave the MC illustration on because I just love seeing extra art on screen. I don't self-insert that much because I cannot pretend that I would somehow fit into the world of the game LOL but of course I would choose choices I agree on the most, unless it is WAY out of character for the MC to do (99.9% of the time the choices aren't THAT egregious.)
