Do you enjoy parody games, or do you think there's still a public stigma attached to the romance and dating sim genre?

I consider them fun comedic relief (self-aware humor) but sometimes they're seen as unserious/frivolous (ripe for roasting).
Hatoful Boyfriend remains my favorite Otome parody game.

It depends on the intention behind them! Stuff like Hatoful Kareshi and Gakuen Handsome? Love 'em; they're made with love for the genre, they're funny, silly, and like you said, self aware!

But when they're made by people that don't like the genre all that much? Not my favorite. You can tell they don't think of visual novels or dating sims as actual games and more as something "kooky" or cringeworthy, in some cases the approach feels contemptuous even. Or sometimes, it's obvious some are made as a quick cash grab? Gotta pour your heart into it; it's art at the end of the day! Commit!

More love for Gakuen Handsome ❤️ After all, it is the only game that will pronounce MC's name, even if you change it from default

I think its a fun spin on the genre lol. Parody or not, it still does garner interest on dating sims which is more than welcome for me.

Parodies are a fun type of comedy, but in dating sims I typically enjoy them more if they're done more for the love of genre, not if they look down on it. Mean-spirited intentions seems to rub away the charm for me.

I like them if they're funny and don't promote misogyny.
I absolutely love Hatoful Boyfriend and its sequel! They're the best thing ever! ❤❤❤
Agree on these Lol.

Hope that not a lot of people hate on the parodies too much, as most of it are all in good fun and are actually good.

Parodies are enjoyable to me only if I can tell they're made in light-hearted fun, and not in a "LOL who cares about this cringe shit anyway?" type of way. Forgive me for how "thing, Japan" the rest of this post is gonna sound like, but I think that's why I tend to look at western "parody" sims with distrust because most of the time, it feels like they're made to shit on the genre instead of appreciating it for what it is and poking fun at some tropes here and there.

For example, I'm never gonna touch Date Everything within a 50-foot radius because from the vibes I got, it gave off the "warning signs" that it would only piss me off.

I might be a bit of a downer here, but considering we still live in an era where you have people making jokes about visual novels as a medium to begin with (thinking about the "VN gameplay" jokes especially), I don't have much faith that western devs especially can create parody games that don't feel malicious in some way. The only one that didn't seem malicious I can think of off the top of my head was Dream Daddy and I wonder if it's really because it's more sincere or simply because I got baited by the dads and feel too soft over it because of that since it's been a looooong time I played that one.

On a completely unrelated note, I definitely need to play Gakuen Handsome.

I remember Date Everything and Dungeon Boyfriend; the vibes put me off. Dream Daddy is a guilty pleasure for me too. I also tend to be more critical of western created parodies compared to the influx of JP since they have years of exp behind their tongue-in-cheek parody games.

Intent matters. The most recent parody game was a cash grab, even disregarding that some of the writers were romance VN/IF authors (This is about Date Everything). Even the ones I enjoyed I still scratch my head over. Even good intent doesn't translate to people unfamiliar with the genre so these people may come out of the game thinking the genre is frivolous and low quality and or annoyingly assuming that this is the best the genre has to offer and call it the greatest game to ever exist.

Like others said, it depends on the intent. There's plenty of parody games that are made by serious game makers or fans of the genre and it's not purely just to plant a flag in what they consider an untapped market. (ಠ╭╮ಠ)

It's easier to play things off as a joke if things go sour than seriously trying to make a game that doesn't bash its audience that enjoy the genre.

I think that's where some parodies fall flat as it's not teasing, it's purely trying to shine a mirror on its fanbase of the genre and make fun of them. It's grandstanding at best for those treating it like it's less of a game because it's targeted to a female audience let alone one that includes romance options for women. (。-`ω´-)
