Question Base64 usage

I can see a pop up about Base64 on top of the page that it can be used in formatting of the post and I also see it used in other ppl posts where they use it to spoiler their links or author names. I was wondering, what was the feature intended for and where should it be used?

Thanks, I thought there was something deeper to it, but if I understand correctly ppl just use it for fun
