If I had to recommend one otome game that I think every otome fan should try at least once, it would definitely be Hakuouki.

It's one of those classics that I feel is almost essential if you want to explore the genre. The game is long and has a lot of content, especially if you play the full story, but that's also one of the things I love about it. You really get to spend a lot of time with the characters and immerse yourself in its world instead of feeling like everything is over too quickly.

The story is also much more serious and emotionally intense than you might expect from a beginner otome game. It has romance, of course, but there's also a strong focus on the plot, the historical setting, and the characters' struggles. Since it's set during the Bakumatsu period and revolves around the Shinsengumi, you can even learn a little about Japanese history along the way, although the game obviously takes plenty of creative liberties with historical events. I personally love otome games that give me something substantial to experience beyond just romance, and Hakuouki definitely delivers that.

Another reason I would recommend it is simply because it's such an important classic within the otome genre. The characters are iconic, the story has left a huge impression on so many players, and it has been around for a long time for a reason. I think it's one of those games that really lets you understand why Hakuouki became such a major name in otome games.

It's definitely a commitment because there are so many routes and a lot of story to get through, but by the time you're finished, it feels incredibly satisfying and fulfilling. It's the kind of game where you can really feel that you've gone on a long journey with the characters.

So for me, Hakuouki is absolutely a must-play classic. If you're new to otome games and want to experience one of the genre's most well-known and story-heavy titles, I think it's a great place to start. Just be prepared for a long, emotional journey. 😂

If they want English, I'll recommend "Amnesia" and "Him, The Smile & Bloom"
But, if they don't mind Japanese, "Ayakashi Gohan" (though it has an unofficial English patch) and "Starry Sky".

The recommendations will change depending on their preferences. Since not everyone likes certain tags (especially with Amnesia *cough*), I always ask what they don't like first lol

If you mean the classics, maybe titles like Hakuoki, Angelique, or Tokimeki Memorial?

hmm when it comes to the classics, Hakuoki comes to mind 🤔 There's also Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side, and Sweet Fuse: By Your Side.
