When I place the files in the data folder and use the crack, the game just crashes right afterwards. Is there something extra I am missing?

Try changing format and location to japanese.
I've tested the game and its working on windows 7 64 bit.

I think the problem might either be graphics or windows.
Are you using a Laptop?

no a desktop. Just to confirm, your settings are format japan, home location japan, sys locale japanese?

Yes all are japan.
Do you get a message when the game crash.
Try to update graphics and directX, the problem might be driver or software which has been installed improperly,
also try to disable your antivirus if you have one.
If it still doesn't work you either need to do a clean windows install or play the game through virtualisation (vmware or virtualbox)
