For me the main reason I even play Otome is so I can self insert lol. At least most of the time unless she really is horrible then I just give up on the game or try to disassociate lol.

I go with whoever catches my eye. But somehow i always end up in the route that is locked, end game character or the one with the most spoilers heavy lol. I guess it just mean the developers just wrote them too good

I don't think there's a lot of horror elements when it comes to otome games, but some i know are indie types like Bloody Painter Dating Sim or like 7'scarles and Psychedelic of the Black Butterfly or maybe even Diabolik Lovers but that one is in Japanese language only.

Depends.... I see myself when the protagonist is thinking the same as me otherwise if they act totally different then i see them as separated. But when it gets to the super sad parts like the ML heart breaking past then I WANT IT TO BE ME!!! :deadsad:
