It's not a lost technology, many modern games use Live2D. Check LicoBiTs' releases for example (Utakata no Uchronia, Un:Logical and Le Mirage Mystique), they all have highly animated sprites. Also, majority of mobile games have this kind of animations. If anything, pictures move too much...

My take on this: people have a lot of games already out when they are starting (including those that came out a long time ago), so it seems like there are many. But games were and are coming out at somewhat slow pace, people just caught up with them. But I do want more :cry:

私も終焉のヴィルシュは未プレイですけど、皆さんが恐れているBL要素はとあるキャラ（攻略キャラじゃない）が他のキャラに一方的におもいを寄せているだけだと聞きました。思いが寄せられていたキャラは終始それに気づいていないし、寄せている方も行動を起こしていないそうです。濃厚なイチャイチャが行われているわけではないです:LOL: 行われていたら、ゲームの評価が高くなっていなかったと思います。
