Do you prefer long common route -> shorter character route OR short common route -> longer character route

As others mentioned, it depends on the game and writing.

While I think it's important to set things up, if I played a game for romance, I would rather have shorter common routes and longer character routes so that I see the relationships build up longer lol

Personally, I prefer a longer common route too! I like having enough time to get to know the whole cast and see their relationships develop before going into the individual routes. It makes me feel more attached to the characters!

Short common route -> longer character route if the other characters are not forgotten and appear a couple times! Also skipping for specific character routes take longer if the common route is long lol

as much as i hate it, i like a long common route because it gives us more backstory about the characters and what we're gonna deal with before the actual routes. but a short common route that summarizes everything with a long character route would be perfect

The problem I've found with common routes is that they are too often perfunctory. It's a means to introduce the world, the characters, the protagonist's situation. On paper, sounds reasonable; in practice, it all feels overly rehearsed and pragmatic, like an advertisement or vertical slice, unwilling to do anything truly adventurous *yet*. The action proper tends to start with the character routes, so I prefer them longer. That being said, I'm not a huge fun of games that immediately ask you to pick a LI, going by looks alone.

I prefer a short common route with longer character routes, I get really impatient with long common routes

I prefer a balance between the two, but if I had to choose, definitely character routes.
Especially if the game has a very heavy plot, I want to get as much romance as possible.

Longer common routes if there are some interesting interaction between the male leaders, and short common route if there are just some chat and chat and chat.

I prefer short common routes and long character routes.
Like in Piofiore.

I also prefer short common routes and long character routes, but sometimes I do like it if both are equally lengthy. A long common route sets up the story while a long character route allows us to get to know the LI and also have more time spent with them for romancing.

I definitely prefer shorter common routes! I want to spend as much time as possible with each LI and really enjoy their individual stories. That's why Piofiore: Fated Memories was so satisfying for me. The common route is incredibly short, lol. If you're someone who enjoys shorter common routes, I'd definitely recommend giving Piofiore: Fated Memories a try!

As for worldbuilding, I actually really enjoy it when the lore is revealed piece by piece throughout the different character routes, almost like putting together a puzzle in my head. It makes figuring out the bigger picture so much more fun for me!

I prefer a structure where a relatively short common route is followed by longer individual character routes.
Once I've grasped the world-building and the basic dynamics between characters during the common route, I want to jump straight into my favorite character's route and fully immerse myself in the intense, intimate drama that unfolds between the two of us.
If the common route drags on for too long, I tend to burn out when trying to replay the game...

As long as it's properly executed, I'm fine with either! It would be a dream for me though if we get a well-written game with a long common route AND a long character route lol

I prefer the progression of the expression "horter character route OR short common route -> longer character route."

I like that each character has a story that fits them so you can feel their unique personality

If i really take an interest towards the game i would take the longer route. I enjoy dwelling my eyes to read and immerse my mind to many scenarios. Cuz it fulfilled my cravings whenever i wish for more scenes of that Fav LIs. But if the game is just a casual feeling for me, I would rather take the short route. Yeah, depends on the game personally

I prefer shorter common routes, so there's more time in the personal routes to get to know the characters I like. A balance between the common and personal routes is also nice.

I feel like games with a fully fleshed out common route often have rushed character storylines. That said, thats why some games get sequels probably. I believe 50/50 would be the best for me personally.

I'd prefer short common route to longer character routes

I like getting to the actual romance sooner, and having more time with each LI makes the relationship feel more developed. A long common route can be fun if the world-building and group dynamics are really good, but if it drags too much, I start wanting to get to the individual routes already.

I don't like long common routes; I almost died reading Tengoku, though that wasn't too bad. Games where the common route makes up about 80% of the entire game are way more painful... I'd much rather have long character routes.

Short common route, long character route! Only because I need some time to get use to the character before I jump in to the character route

I think it's nice when you can choose individual routes from the very beginning, too. Personally, I prefer a short common route followed by longer individual routes. But if a game has a long common route, I feel like there needs to be differences in the dialogue or choices that actually change how things play out, so that it stays fun even after multiple playthroughs. Otherwise, I'll probably just skip through it.

Definitely a short common route and longer character routes! I much prefer getting to the actual character's story sooner, and I'd rather have more time with each LI and their individual route.
