Canon MC name vs Self-Insert?

I usually go with the canon name when there's one, unless it's one that I don't particularly like. Otherwise, I just make up a name that would make sense with the setting - using my name/nickname feels a bit out of place and ruins the immersion for me.

Same. I really love hearing LI calling heroine by name when it is possible, it helps to feel their relationships deeply

I always like to use canon MC's name. But when I was younger I already played some of mobile otoge with my own name. But now, I prefer always use MC's name.
 
I always use the MC's canon name. No matter how relatable their personality or their situation might be, I always view them as a separate individual from me. Doesn't matter if the game is voiced or not.
 
Canon 100% I love when LIs pronounce MCs name because it makes me feel like she exists as an actual character and not a blank slate
 
I prefer having the protagonist addressed by name, so I leave it as is rather than changing it. I don't project myself onto the character, either; I prefer to maintain a bird's-eye view of the situation.

I rarely stick to canon names, but I never self-insert because it makes me feel uncomfortable. Instead, I give the MC a different name each playthrough, treating it like an alternate timeline with a slightly different MC (with my own headcanons for backstory and personality) romancing a different LI. It helps make each route feel like its own standalone story.
 
If I like the canon name then yes! But I think that was only the case with Liliana MC. I mostly have a set name for otome games — one for a medieval setting, a different one if it's historical Japan (Yukiji bc of Kamisama Kiss), and another for modern Japan.

I had never really thought about it before, but I always use my gaming name "Aria" when playing a character, yet I don't identify as her.
 
Depends- I like self insert, but if the character has enough of a lore background to them, I will just go with the canon name.

Typically I prefer second person POV for self insert stuff anyway and you rarely ever find that in otome games.

Sometimes I like to use my own nickname if it fits the setting, but usually I'll take the canon name(assuming the name is voiced) so I can hear how the LIs say the name. It usually flows better, too. I'm not too picky about names, I've gone by many on the internet over the years so even if I'm self inserting, having a different name isn't super weird.
 
I always keep the original name. For multiple reasons, but like others have said I like to hear the characters say the MCs name. Honestly, even for games where the MC has no canon name and you have to choose one, I often just pick something at random.
 
I always use the official name.
I'm not really the type who enjoys otome games by projecting myself onto the protagonist.
I enjoy experiencing the story from the protagonist's point of view.

I'm not good at coming up with names so I also use the canon name. If I had to come up with a name myself, I would use the letter A
 
I usually use the official names too, because they're pronounceable, and I'm not great at coming up with names myself.
 
I never really use a canon name, I've always use my online nickname for games so it just sticks with me more ^^
 
I've used both my own name and the default name, and honestly seeing my own name while playing sometimes takes me out of the story and ruins my immersion lol. I feel like this image

When i use the default name it's like I'm reading a manga/book, making the story feel like it's actually happening.
