How many love interests do you think is the ideal number for an otome game?

ooooh... 5? it depends if there is gonna be more games, if its intended to be a lot of writing, etc. i personally love and hate long visual novels, i love them because a buncha playtime is amazizng, but hate them because if i got burnt out, i would forget the majority of what happened when i got back on the game

i'm definitely biased because most games i played when i started out had this format, so i'm most used to it, but i'd also have to say 5! although i don't mind playing games with less or more LIs, either

The me from five years ago wouldn't have been satisfied with five, she was feasting with Hakuoki! But right now? Yeah I do think five is the sweet spot or even six. It's just so hard to maintain consistent quality writing with so many LIs, some of them just end up getting screwed over. So while I do enjoy having a large cast, I'd rather each LI shine in their own route. It really sucks when you're so excited to play a LI's route bc the other routes were great, surely this one would be the same as well right? ...Then it ends up being a snoozefest.

I'd say four to six. When there are too many LIs, some story routes may end up feeling half‑baked.

Not every game with a large number of romanceable characters suffers from this, but having too many can lead to repetitive story elements; plus, if you lose interest halfway through, unlocking the hidden content starts to feel like a real chore. That's why I think around five characters is ideal.
With fewer characters, there is more depth to each individual route, allowing you to take your time and enjoy the story. That said, some people might find a smaller roster a bit lacking 😅
