Worst happy endings?

Personally, even if endings where characters or everyone dies are pretty depressing... like in Nightshade or Hakuoki

I still can´t get over Mysir´s "happy ending" at Café Enchanté.

It wasn't just the big letdown or the lack of proper romance like in the other routes, but...
Kotone´s fate, for some reason, really disturbed me. Being unable ever to leave, touch someone, and even outlive all of her friends and boyfriend... I can´t think of a more miserable way to spend eternity. What if someone doesn´t return? Living with that uncertainty, if a friend had died or something had happened, without a way to do anything, really scares me. And even if most of her friends will live long... just like in Frieren, that long will eventually pass in a flash for her. And she will be all alone again.

Have you ever experienced a "happy ending" that left you feeling hollow and hopeless?
I have heard about another otome with happy endings that make you feel devastated, but I don't remember the title.

And as I´m a sucker for sappy happy endings or bittersweet endings... It would be nice to be warned of other stories that might leave a similar bad taste.

Kanato's in the first DiaLovers game, Yui doesn't die, but she lost her humanity, became a vampire, and is no more a sweet and kind girl we see at the beginning, I felt very uneasy when hearing her said she was fine with Kanato bringing human to their house to make them do the housework then suck dry their blood... To me, that girl isn't Yui anymore, Kanato destroyed her very core persona.

Yeah nightshade is up there, at first I was like "aww sexy ninja game" and then the next minute everyone is fucking dying even in the happy ends, like sure me and my baby Chojiro got there in the end but not before he tried to choke me first

Lucas's ending in Virche is a complete nightmare, nothing even remotely good in the FD also 🥲

And it's the same story with Mathis Ma poor baby

What do you mean you end up together with the guy who put you in a dog cage and drugged you!??? 😭😭

I actually haven't played Amnesia yet. I just bought it cause it was on sale on steam. I've seen the anime though.

The last "good" ending for one of the LIs in
Ephemeral -FANTASY ON DARK-
.... It was my first route ever, and i am scared of my happy end not being happy ever since...

The
nightshade
endings were definitely very devastating for me since it was my first game.

But now I have played 50+ games, I can confidently say the worst happy ending is def
Lucas
ending from Virche. I remember when I saw the ending cg pop up, I was even like "seriously?!"😅 so messed up

Yang's fated memories best ending. Since the whole route was bland and boring for me, that best ending was plainly unsatisfactory... The Good end where he pretty much just dies because he can't bring himself to kill us on time made a lot more sense and felt more like something had actually changed in him and gave him an actual arc.

In DiaLov Dark Fate, Kanato route, that inconclusive ending was clearly a bad one. Kanato couldn't control his powers, and they were after him. I think a bad end was clearly in store for them.

Auger's "Good Ending" in BWS— that obviously wasn't a good ending. Auger had simply made a fool of Fiona.

Matsurik no Kei, Fuen route— ending up with that guy is a terrible ending because he never saw Naaya as separate from his former love.

A good ending, Ascot route— being with a fairy who doesn't understand your feelings and doesn't even tell you he loves you? I don't know. I don't know what the protagonist could have seen in that guy.

Psychedelica BB, Kagiha route— I don't need to explain because the protagonist literally dies.

Hakuoki Otome Game, Hijikata Toshizo's Ending:

Although he defeated the main villain and was given the [Oni] icon, the male protagonist's lifespan was shortened, and he would eventually die before the female protagonist. He was merely clinging to life, cherishing the remaining moments.

Okita Souji's Ending:
He was originally a doctor for tuberculosis, but at the time there was no cure; it was a terminal illness, only treating the symptoms. Even drinking the Elixir of Youth couldn't cure him, and the more he used his power, the sooner he would die. So pitiful

Asato from Lamento

I know people like it but I was so put off by the whole thing. It's supposed to be a traditional happy ending where he and Konoe live happily ever after in Asato's village. But like, this is the same village that hated him as he grew up, treated him terribly, trapped him in the village, and then tried to kill him during the events of the game. There's not even a real apology from the village and they clearly still treat the two of them as outsiders in the epilogue. It makes me sad to see in Asato's "perfect" he goes back to them and they barely treat him any different. He deserves to be surrounded by people that actually care about him.

What's interesting is that he has an arguably better ending on another character's route. His village stops trying to kill him and he gets to spend his days exploring a world he kept from. He seems genuinly happy and free.
