Canon MC name vs Self-Insert?

It really depends, i know i used to always self insert but i started to lil by lil keeping the og name of the heroine ( mostly bc i love hearing the characters actually saying mc's name than just a kimi anatawa…) but it still depends lol, i got lucky enough to have an otome game heroine having the same name as me so i was really happy to keep it and listen to the characters actually saying my name xDD

I use canon name, since the actions or the options they give to the players won't always be exactly how I'd respond or react, so it doesn't really feel like a real self-insert. I see the MC as like a character of her own and I'm just the mastermind behind her decision making hehe

I prefer to play vn's with gender choice, but i play bl's and gl's too. Very rare thing for me to play pure otome. I used to play everything years ago, but now there's just a lot to go through, my tastes changed, got pickier in general. Good thing there's a lot of novels where you can at least choose pronoun. As a not very gender conforming gay guy - that is as close to me as it can get. Do i ever feel self inserted? Nope. It's impossible and more like role-play for me.

When mc don't have preset looks or customization, i usually just rotate three names i always use. My own name for games set in present and close to reality, one name for medival/fantasy and one for anything else. Plus one name i use for sapphic/gl novels.
For mc's with set look's i go with canon names. Like, i can't imagine Palmier from Bewitching Sinners not being Palmier(god that dude's hot af, can't wait for Royal Blood).

I use the official names.
But I do project myself onto them—like fully immersing myself in the character and projecting myself onto them.
The names aren't that important.

I love using the canon name, especially since it's voiced by default in most games with voice acting. Plus, I feel a bit awkward about using a self-insert name that doesn't fit in with all the usually Japanese names in the story

I never self insert and it feels too awkward to use my own name. I prefer that there's a set name so that I don't have to think about a random name to input. That being said, I do still play games where the protagonist is determined by the player. It doesn't deter me but I do have to spend like 20 minutes picking out a random name. I also just prefer set protagonists with names and personalities because the set name is often voiced and the MC feels part of the world.

I use my nickname in every game. One of the nice things about learning Japanese is being able to write my name in kanji. If I remember correctly, out of all the otome games I've played, the only one that has voiced pronunciation for the player's name is Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side. There might be others, but I'm not familiar with them...

I used to try and self-insert, but now I usually just use an OC name for the heroine and treat it more like I'm watching her story instead of it being me directly.

If the heroine has a set personality and looks then definitely canon name, especially if it's voiced by the LIs.
In games with established heroines like that I can't really self-insert, so I just follow her story instead.

I cannot self insert at all so I keep the canon name and view the heroine as her own person and not myself. Also I loove it when the vas actually say the name so bonus points for using the default name. For Voltage titles you usually had to make a name so I would just use a random name.

I always use the canon name, but i think it's nice to have the option to change it for people who need that!
I don't like when the heroine doesn't have a name of her own and it forces you to name her though...

It really depends. If the characters call MC's canon name then I will definitely go for it, if not, I usually set my mascot's name.
But having the characters actually call MC's name is a bonus point for me, I really like it.

If the game / CD already has a canon MC name - then I'll always play as her :3
Don't really self-insert even when their name is customisable so it'll be a random name!

I use the official MC names a lot because I want it to feel like I'm reading a novel. I don't think I've ever changed them before, except maybe when I was really young!

Honestly, I always go with the canon name.

I can't stand self-inserting lol. It feels so awkward when the LIs skip over your name or use some weird generic title because the game can't pronounce whatever you typed in.

Plus, if the MC already has a default name, I'd rather just see their actual personality and story unfold as intended instead of pretending it's me huhu
#TeamSelfInsert 🤣🤣🤣 tbh I dislike the name self-insert because 9/10 I'm not using my name, I craf an OC and insert them in the game but I gues that's almost the same thing💀 I just don't like not being given the choice to pick my name, yeah it sucks if there are voiced lines and it sounds weird when you don't hear yours, but over the years I've started wanting to see names from my country be used in games so having a customisable MC really helps with that.

It depends on whether it's voiced. Some otome games will actually say the protagonist's canon name if you don't change it, so I usually keep the canon name when it's voiced. But if it isn't voiced, I usually give the character a different name.

I usually stick with the canon name. I like hearing the characters say the heroine's name in voiced lines, and it bothers me a little when they skip over it. That said, if the heroine's name isn't voiced, I often change it instead.

I usually prefer using the MC's canon name but sometimes when i feel insipired i give her a very unfunny name, never mine tho!!

I tend to self insert whenever it's possible !! BUT if the MC isn't an empty shell and has a character design on the cgs and has a developped personality i'll keep the canon name

I prefer canon names if the MC is already pre-determined, and if it has a voice acting because the boys can call her name 😄. But if the games have a customizable MC, or no voice acting, i usually change the name.

If the protagonist has a default or official name, I'll use that.
Sometimes, though, there are games where you can freely name the protagonist and there's no preset default name. Those are the ones that really leave me scratching my head. haha
