And I'mma add my unpopular opinion related to this rn, but not only are the writers who include BL contents or insinuations in otome very sus and annoying for trying to dilute the genre, they're also likely to come off as homophobic IMO. Case in point: Hugo in Virche Evermore.

Out of all the possible ways to handle the love of a man for another man. Out of all the possible roles to give the ONE gay character in the whole game. They made him an asshole to the heroine, which is a proxy for US, the female player, the target audience, a heroine written to hate herself, meekly made to go "Oh, HE is the one suited for Yves!" in a humiliating position just before making him kill us. And that's just the beginning of my gripes with how they handled this character. The one and only gay character in the whole fucking game, given the same narrative role as Jean and Capucine and their obsessions/"distorted" love, to make him the token tragic side-character feelings footnote of Yves' route, as if whatever the fuck Jean and FUCKING CAPUCINE had going on is somehow equiparable to a man having feelings for another man. And of course, to top it all off, they kill off Hugo practically off-screen. Because it absolutely made sense to establish the character to be specifically gay and then kill him in the same route.

Anyway that's personally the problem *I* have with Virche's writing. What an odd set of choices.

Yes, her fans keep saying she was just the supervisor, and that she was really sad about how her work was changed, But she didn't stop it from happening, did she? And besides, she even reposted the scriptwriter's statement back then.

Additional unpopular opinion: mainstream LADS players mostly don't really understand the genre and that's ok, for many it is their first otome experience and if it begins and ends with LADS that's okay. However, it's annoying to no end how they played that one game and suddenly claim to know it all about how otome games work and are supposed to be. It's also annoying when they've played only that game and maybe MAYBE watched the anime adaptation of another game and then claim to know all about the genre off their shallow first impressions.

Also: eyeless/faceless heroines were never distracting or ugly and game devs should've kept an option to turn them on and off because the games are expensive as fuck and that's a super tiny feature that would require just a little bit more pay to the art team, pay that I can't even be sure they're actually getting fairly considering how most industries work.

The majority of players of all Chinese mobile otome games are like this. They say they can't stand the storylines in Japanese otome games (even though most of them have only played a few older titles like The Queen Bee's Royal Chamber, Butterfly's Poison; Blood Chains etc, and then act like that represents all Japanese otome games). They also criticize Japanese otome heroines for having their own personalities, saying that heroines shouldn't have souls of their own, that they should just be self-insert skins for the player.

Ohh that's high key annoying too! I feel like... Some people just don't understand?? That even as self-insert, we need settings to make the story work? T.T the heroines are our proxy with which we enter the world and their setting becomes ours when we play... The one that helps us see the best sides of the LIs according to the writers... It's really not that complicated imo. Even the blankest of slates has a setting even if the setting is being an office lady. Suddenly all the players who have never stepped in an office job can't self-insert into that role according to the same logic!

Im not gonna lie it to me it shows their age in a way? Or if they're a recent/new fan - I grew up playing otome since I was 14 so I just had to go with good ol rebirthday song, ozmafia, ayakashi Gohan, Dandelion, Amnesia, etc before big productions came to be in 2017~

Also virche was an absolute abomination to the otome genre pls - no plot development just straight up gore and manslaughter

I personally haven't played R18 otomes (except men of Yoshiwara) but voiced MCs im okay with typically in otomes, mainly because I dont self insert and view it as a third person romance- I think they should be able to be muted like LIs tho... I also wouldn't want them moaning in my ear (respectfully) when most games as you mentioned force the women somehow...like that's just...

But YES to your point about women only writing otomes - because they absolutely COOK in these storylines, you can see a woman's imagination come to life in world building games like Olympia Soiree where they literally created an entire caste system that's actively scrutinized in a way so deep... or even in Rebirthday song...

I also say this with peace and love, women typically write many plot lines with a pure, sincere mindset (not as horny as men tbh) and it makes these scenes touch our hearts so deeply and connect with us in a way a woman would know how to. Men write deep plot lines, yes, but otome's sincere/gentle plot lines are made for an audience that seeks a story beyond just horniness/sex appeal... maybe if a man adds some perspective it could be fine, but he shouldn't lead something thats made for women by women.

Although I like Amnesia and have a deep affection for it because it's one of the otome games I started with, it's very overrated. I really don't understand when someone starts playing otome games and recommends Amnesia. By 2026, we have better otome games than just Amnesia.

Another opinion, since they took Virche's approach, is that its tragic model got out of hand. There are endings that turned out tragic in a simply stupid way, and they're tragic because it was Virche, and there are no happy endings.

Another unpopular opinion was one my friends and I had while playing Black Wolves Saga: torture scenes that seem to cater to unnecessarily long, uncomfortable fetishes, so much so that they seemed intentionally designed to appeal to a certain type of audience.

LITERALLY! THE SUBSTANCE IS THE BREAD AND BUTTER: to me any good otome romance requires tons of context, buildup, and just sincere, sincere heartfelt care and love into the male leads that women write so sincerely. I'm not saying men cant do it, but I guess it's like a 5% chance out of 95% that thr guy working on this otome game is a literature fan, poet, or is into romanticism to an extent that can replicate a woman's mindset towards love.
