Do you prefer a "no personality" MC or a "set personality" one?

Because I prefer to enjoy the story without feeling personally invested, I tend to prefer protagonists with distinct personalities. If the protagonist's personality and the storyline become too inconsistent, I might choose to stop playing the game.

Really prefer MCs with strong personalities! I just feel like it makes the dynamics with the LIs more interesting. I enjoy reading how they interact differently across the routes.

honestly same i hate self-inserting myself into stories, especially romantic ones.

I prefer an MC with a set personality because... if she doesn't have a personality of her own, just what exactly are the LIs attracted to? Looks alone? Right place right time? No thank you.

Honestly I find it odd that self-insert is even part of this topic, let alone the main reason discussed in so many of the replies. Most narrative games write a protagonist they intend the audience to empathize with, so my take on "self-insert" is the same as when I'm controlling set chars like Link or 2B. They're my avatars for interacting with the game world, so I have "self-inserted" in that manner, and I experience the emotion of their stories through them.

I prefer a set-personality MC. I enjoy when the protagonist has her own thoughts, strengths and flaws because it makes the story feel more engaging and the character interactions more meaningful. I find that a defined personality usually leads to better character development

IMO, set personality MCs are so much better than no-personality ones; they make the story feel deeper and more immersive. A blank, no-personality one often feels flat and boring after a while, lol. It makes them 1-dimensional. I feel like when the MC has their own quirks and flaws and can voice their own opinion, the story gets way more interesting and enjoyable. The choices feel more 'real', and it makes me actually care about what happens to them. Also, I much prefer MCs with a background too; I want to know what happened to make them who they are today. Blank ones have none of the things that make you actually care for them; I mean, they exist only for players to self-insert into after all.

Set personalities are my favorite, doubly so if they have a portrait to the side of their dialogue to show their expressions during the story. I like to view it as I'm a third-party observing two people falling in love, so when the MC is generic to facilitate self-insert I feel a bit bored and not invested. I love fleshed-out women characters in ALL my media, so I always want the MC to be a girl who has real personality; loves, hates, likes and dislikes, flaws that can be overcome or faced with help from the LI.

It's important to me tha main characters have distinct personality traits. I can't enjoy the story otherwise. Which is why I feel it's a shame that most old Voltage titles have the blandest self insert MC.

ALWAYS prefer personality over no-personality, I understand not giving them a personality is a way to help the self-insert thing but I always play these as a story so it's like, the self insert thing is not a priority for me, I'd rather feel like the character is fleshed out and real than just a cut out piece of cardboard if that makes sense?

When I play games, it feels a bit like reading a novel. That's why I like it when the main character has a strong personality.

i definitely prefer a set personality mc it makes the story and interactions way more engaging and memorable plus i feel more connected to the character when they actually have their own thoughts and traits

My brain just doesn't work in the way that allows me to self-insert, so I prefer 'set personality' type; however, the perception depends not on the degree of unique features, but on my feeling that I would marry this MC if she was a real woman. Sometimes the 'doormat' protags are more appealing to me due to their soft and kind behaviour creating the desire to protect them from the atrocities of any evil MLs or antagonists

i never see myself as someone in the world, but someone who observes! i loooove when the mc has a set personality, has sprites on the side and all! i think it's because games that have mcs with blank slates for their personality have a hard time with story writing in general, since it feels very one sided most of the time.

is there an otome game with self-insert personality? all the game i played is default personality

I honestly wish there were more otomes with MC that have super distinctive character traits. I'm not a self-inserter at all and I feel like a MC with a unique personality explains the devotion of her LIs

I will always prefer a set personality mc over a self insert. That being said, a self insert mc will not put me off any game. some of my favourite otomes have self inserts like amnesia and sympathy kiss

If it's a game published from a big company then I am okay with MCs having a set personality, if it's a small indie team then no. I find that small indie MCs can be very annoying or rude compared to the published ones we get. The writing is just very different between the two when it comes to personalities, you can tell which are professional writers or just know how to make likeable characters in general.

I definitely prefer a set personality. I feel like if you can customize the MC, you can forgive the neutral ones a bit, but it really depends on the plot. I'll always go for the ones with more personality though, especially if she isn't a total pushover lol

I agree with this!! There are times where it feels like I can tailor the personality of the MC with certain dialogue options, which I really like.

I've never even played an otome MC without her having a set backstory, personality, and preference! Where are you guys finding these gems????

Anyways, yeahhh I hate set personalities with a passion. My personal opinion is that, if I wanted to see what a specific character would do/act/say in a certain situation, I'd just read a book. There's no agency to be had, as a player, if she is her own person outside of the choices I get to pick from. Even if it is an unobtrusive backstory, where she has powers or an inheritance, I can't stand it.

It's less a self insert issue, and more of a "This is who I'd choose to put in this situation, and how they'd act, but the MC is doing things completely different." Kinda problem. If I'm constantly despairing over the choices I get or how she reacts to things beyond where I pick, then I cannot enjoy the game.

Even amare games are guilty of overrxplaining every detail of the MC until there's little point in even playing since I've barely gotten any input.
