What do you think if your favorite character/LI is less popular than other character/LI?

Recently i make my koilog account (you can check the link in my bio) and realized that the site is having some unique system where every user there can cast vote their favorite LIs and show off your top 10 favorite character on your profile for other to see. Tbh at first i was "wow this system is different than vndb" and then when i organized my otome list there and ranking my favorite LIs for the specific title i found out that some of the LIs rank result for some games is kinda...pissed me off? I know each people having a different taste and i can't blame them for liking specific LI but wow, i can't believe it how the hell "A" is being popular rather than "B" and so on. For others in here..how do you think about this? Do you prefer your favorite character popularity is underwhelming (benefiting how less popular they are so that you can keep them to yourself, rare content/fanart but cheaper merch and finding the certain merch/cd/etc is easiest due to their less popularity = less demand) or overwhelming (i love that other people having the exact same taste as me so that's mean i'm not alone! more content/fanart/merch and other stuff due to their popularity despite for some who collect their merch needs to bear the "sold out" and overpriced due to their overwhelming popularity = more demand)? Which team are you on?

I'm fine either way lol It's okay if A is more popular than B. I only look at the poll results and laugh, then continue with my day.

I have too much merch from non-otome series, so I'm not really into otome merch like pins, keychains or standees. I'm more into their manga or artbooks instead, in artbooks, my favorite is always there. But if my favorite is too popular and his merch is either sold out or overpriced... I'll probably make his merch myself lol

I always end up liking less popular characters so I am pretty used to it, I do find it sad to see my fav being underapreciated but everyone has unquie taste so it is what it is.

I think I tend to choose characters who aren't the most popular. But it's not really something that bothers me. If it turns out my favorite is less popular, I just think "oh, okay" and enjoy him anyway.

koilog's ranking system is very amusing to me because there have been three to four instances now where solely because i ranked the lowest ranked li as my #1 it has caused them to no longer be at the bottom lol

it used to bother me before since it felt like my favourite was being misunderstood but i realized that in some games i have the exact rankings as most people do, whereas in others i have extremely unconventional and messed up ones ^^;;; so it's just something ive made peace with because i like what i like and even if other people didnt enjoy it, it was clearly made for someone as a target audience and that audience is me lol

i will also say though im not completely immune to not getting pissed off, recently over requiemz came out in eng and i saw lots of people having noil dead last which is fine, yknow im ok with people enjoying what they like but i also saw lots of people have him ranked last solely because they stripped him away from his character and demoted him to just being a "himbo" ??? which he isnt even one btw he's just a magnet for trouble but he's quite emotionally intelligent so i guess that mischaracterization that comes with your fave being unpopular is something i still havent gotten over T^T

Honestly, I don't mind it at all! It makes my favorite feel like a hidden gem, and the biggest perk is that their merchandise is rarely sold out, way cheaper, and so much easier to find without fighting over stock.

I'm never bothered by those personally, everyone has different opinion/tastes and if anything, it just shows that I could see something in that li that other people couldn't. Also as someone whose one of their all-time favorite character is also the one with the most expensive "character tax" of his series to the point that it's hard for me to buy merchs of him, I'll always be glad if my new fav chara from other series is considered less popular by the fandom.

I think it can feel a little sad, especially when your favorite gets less content or attention. But honestly, it also makes them feel more special because you can enjoy them without following the crowd. And when you find someone else who loves them too, it's instantly like, "OMG, you get it!"

Although it's a bit regrettable not having someone to discuss with, in a sense it also means being able to exclusively enjoy one's affection for a character alone, so thinking about it that way, it's not unacceptable

I tried koilog rank system before and cmiiw they're ranking your #1 vote as +5 vote rather than regular +1 vote i think it's depend on how many LIs per game is, but once you unrank 1 LI or only cast on only 1 LI the system treated the voting system as +4 and for those who votes 1 LI it is only grant them +1 vote. For the exact lowest LI chosen as #1 caused them to no longer at the bottom idk tbh. But roughly the system was like this cmiiw:

#2 : +4 votes
#3 : +3 votes
#4 : +2 votes

Ah you mention about overreq, as you can guess due to the popularity of the game many normies (?) and newbie otomege player is flocking to started play the game and by its popularity the bad side of it is also filter the toxic fans too(imo) over the social media esp on X. About noil, I am not a fan of muscle/kinniku LI and that's also one of the reason why i am uninterested to continue playing the games because i playing his route first that make me on-hold overreq for almost 1 year. By the time i forcing myself to continuing his route this april noil is actually exceeded my expectation that he ended up as my #3 (His R ending is my make me bawl and his dark ending Y is my most favorite dark ending in the game that i think it FITS his characterization.). well, what can we say about his characterization demoted into "himbo", maybe it's due to he's an inspiration of "coward lion" in the OG Wizard of Oz story, moreover i think people is overwhelming by his dark route that makes him end up de-characterization too. Noil is having the heart of gold and good boy even his ending playword as "RELY" is showing his character as someone who's emotional and wanting to be reliable to someone that makes his character as a loyal (just like his devotion toward kaize). I can't find the exact right word but i do hope that you understand what i am trying to say here. :cheers:

haha i can see your intention there. sure sometimes things that overpopular isn't really good too to be honest.

i get it ! i had a bias towards noil mainly because i enjoy his voice actor even tho looks wise he isnt my type as well but im very glad i went with my gut in looking forward to him because his earnestness really got to me ! he tries very hard to be supportive towards others even though he himself has met with a lot of hardship ! im veryy happy that after finishing his route you ended up enjoying him as well <3

i think a lot of people had very strange images going into overreqz in english because they had heard about the nature of the dark routes and assumed it to be a purely enjoyable experience rather than an unfortunate, twisted turn of events T^T people also have a tendency to assign boxes of stereotypes to characters even if it doesnt truly fit them just so it is easier to brush away as something you dont enjoy so sadly finding mischaracterization will always be common T^T

I don't care that much if A is more popular than B, but maybe I'll find myself more annoyed with the story ranking than the preference ranking. Like, A's story is bad and I'll say it with arguments, but if I end up liking A, I'll keep saying that despite it being my favorite lol

For the moment, Koilog classifies otome and romance games by popularity + story impressions, mixing both, so sometimes you find funny things in the ranking.

Instead of feeling sad, I feel more like, "I think B is better for plot reasons/romance reasons," and sometimes A is just a pretty face.

TRUE! i think with how people nowadays is constantly used to feed and eat up yandere media their ways of thinking is also overwhelming by it too i guess? even overreq is also ended up as a victim too, while the true nature of overreq essence centers on overcoming death, grief, and absolute despair to find a way to live on, in reality what overreq is stand out is their yandere-ish media (that maybe for some who misunderstand thinks that overreq trying to sell dark-fantasy esque yandere). The irony.

I don't care or even check the popularity except for the official votes if there is bonus art. It is interesting though to know the trends and sometimes I'm surprised by how my expecation and reality differs. It's like learning social tastes in men (fiction) and the shifts of time? Also it helps to see what SUB characters may eventually become bases for future MAIN characters.

So far most of the characters I've liked tend to be more on the popular side. But in cases where the most popular characters get new CGs made of them etc, I do feel a bit sad because I believe my favorite LI—and let's face it, the others too—deserve new CGs too!
