What are your favourite retellings in otome games?

There are so many amazing stories in otome games, and many are based on existing literature, myths or fairy tales. Which are your favourite retellings?

For example I totally adore Alice in Wonderland, so any games touching the theme are already super interesting to me!

I like western fairy tale retellings the most. There are so many great stories to choose from and kudos to QuinRose for trying to do them all. Fairy tales have great versitility too! They can be sweet and fluffy like the Disney movie versions or lean into darkness. Even popular ones like Alice in Wonderland which have been retold over and over never feel exactly the same.

My personal least favorite is the historical event retellings. Sometimes reading a historical retelling requires research to fully understand the context in which things are happening, especially if it's events that are unrelated to one's own country as those would've been taught in school. If I had better foundational knowledge, I might have been able to enjoy them more. Also lowkey knowing an LI is based on a real person can make them less attractive to me... I like my trashy husbands fictional. Real life trashy men can stay away.

Alice in Wonderland is a good one. There's Taisho X Alice but my fave is definitely QuinRose's Alice in the Country of Hearts. I loved the manga so much too!
I do love a Hades and Persephone retelling, I would love an otome based on that (or Greek mythology in general, I really liked Cupid Parasite for this).

I like it when folklore or legends are involved—or even spooky stories and ghosts. Hanako-san of the Toilet is a prime example; that was featured in 9 R.I.P., too.

I think historical themes are cool as well, but they don't hook me quite as much as ghosts and legends do.

Same, this is why I cant take ikemen vampires seriously.. wdym im supposed to fall in love with William Shakespeare and Isaac Newton 😭 girl i know what they look like, you cant fool me into thinking theyre now these hopeless romantics with a hot bod and sexy face 😭

I like all kinds of mythology and fairy tales. I think it's even more fun if it's something I've never heard of and I get to research and learn about something new.

Sweet Clown takes a lot of inspiration from Hades and Persephone. I thought it was very well done but it is Japanese-only.

I think the game mixes elements from different fairy tales. Alice in Wonderland is probably one of the most popular fairy tales to be retold.

I actually enjoy fairy-tale retellings. But when it comes to my favorite detective stories, I just can't accept any kind of retelling. 😭
