Virche Evermore: what do you think about Ankou's route?

I'll be honest: do you guys also feel like they ruined the essence of Ankou's character? Don't get me wrong, I love his backstory of sacrifice but my problem is when they reveal who he really is. I feel like they really did him dirty changing the way people saw him as character (at least for me, since I'm not a big fan of Adolphe tbf).

Also, I have mixed feelings about the explanations regarding the curse and Ankou's origin.

I liked that they tried to explain soil contamination and Ceres's powers with some "logical" basis, but it becomes weird once they go completely overboard with the sci-fi elements in Ankou's route. It's one thing to have fantasy elements surrounding Ankou's character and the idea of an underworld, but it's something else entirely to delve into time travel. I feel like the game had such a "medieval" theme in certain aspects that this just felt really out of place. I could believe in magic and relivers, but not time travel. You know what I mean? At least that's how the world had been built up so far.

I like Virche's characters, and I think they're well-developed in other ways. Like how Yves seems destined for Ceres and their chemistry, as well as all the faces of Scien that make him an antihero, but Ankou's character was a bit of a letdown imo.

Let me know if I'm not the only one who feels this way pls

Oh interesting! IMO Virche felt like AoT with Sci-Fi dial turned all the way up. What starts as a story confined to a small isolated island suddenly opens up into something much bigger.
Thus their true route twist didn't really bother me since it's setting had already gone pretty wild with the SF vibes. An isolated island that had supposedly been devastated by chemical weapons centuries ago, and a population of only around 3,000? advancing from a single science book brought by Drifter to practical homunculus and clone research in about a century. At that point, if Scien had focused on time travel other than the curse, I wouldn't have found those tech that unbelievable either.

However I'm absolutely in the same camp that preferred Ankou as the mysterious & otherworldly grim reaper figure.
Once his identity was revealed he quickly shifted into comic relief and I kind of missed the mysterious aura he had before. It didn't ruin the character for me, it just felt like a bit of a trade-off
Well his CGs were easily some of the best in the main game, and with him getting a dedicated Le Salute route and even being cover boy in FD, it was quite obvious that developers saw him as one of the game's standout characters. Just not the way how we preferred... I guess?
With three characters essentially sharing the role of "true protagonist", it's understandable that the narrative focus gets spread out. As a result Adolphe ended up feeling a little less prominent than his role in the main story suggested.

TL;DR: Not perfect but I fully enjoyed it

You're not alone! I was thinking the same exact thoughts like you when I played it.
The moment Scien mentioned he'll study time travel I had a feeling what will be next and really hoped I was wrong until the very end. And then I got dissapointed. Not to mention the chromosomes' big reveal with it.
I like Ankou more than Adolphe and I wish he was an actual reaper. Ankou deserves better.

His route is so weird. Considering the twist behind it, I don't think they considered him romanceable in the first place because they wanted to give the spotlight to Adolphe. However, that ended up backfiring because Ankou stole the whole route with his mysterious vibe, but then the truth behind it was a real letdown.

Among the people I interact with the most, Adolphe is almost always ranked last, while Ankou is usually in one of the top spots. I don't know, if they weren't linked, the difference would be minimal.

Obviously, the writers didn't want to be realistic with the concepts, but it did kill the overall vibe of what we thought the story was.

AND YES, Dahut deserved a route.
