When it comes to the character setting for the player, the heroine, I prefer it when we can be normal people lol. Ideally, I like more reserved personalities, but in the end what lets me immerse myself smoothly is coherence.
I'll play the role of Cupid becoming a bridal advisor, the owner of a coffee shop, a high school student, a crossdressed samurai or anything at all as long as the setting, the personality, dialogues, actions and storyline are coherent with each other during the whole game. Otherwise it's immersion breaking. Of course there are bonus points if she vaguely resembles me lol but that's rarely the case since nowadays games favor flashy designs.
Not me about to be the opposite of the previous reply. I'm an eccentric type, so it's easier for me to immerse myself in an otome game when the MC is seen as an oddity of some sort—whether it be because of fashion, personality, or something else. However, I'm definitely not a fan of when the MC is a full-on outcast and blatantly disliked. I have no issue with that setting itself, but I'm not playing otome games for that.
It always takes me out of it when there's an otaku LI or anything similar who says the MC wouldn't understand him and probably looks down on him for his interests… Now I'll take on any role, but this situation specifically always has me going, huh? As if we aren't playing games in a niche genre, www.
My take probably makes me not seem like a self-inserter, but I'm pretty weird in that the easiest MC for me to see as making similar decisions to me was probably Yurika from TaiAli.
There's a lot of aspects that makes an otome game really immersive for me, the obvious thing is having a plot with amazing hooks that keeps you wanting to play more until the end. But for me, even if its the most basic thing ever, is if events that can happen in this real world. There are some characters that have their backstory described as having the worst thing done to them, but sometimes I take a moment to myself and think," Wow, this is something that has actually happened to someone in this world before, and that is shocking." It really sets the tone for me.
I really love mysterious storylines and hidden secrets about the characters. It's so exciting and makes me want to keep playing until the very end
