Historical otome games like Hakuoki

I like historical settings in otome games, the mix of atmosphere, meaning, and experience that modern settings sometimes don't give. The clothing, architecture, customs, even how the characters speak. It creates a world that makes me very curious about it. (Due to that, i've also searched the different historical periods in Japan such as Sengoku, Edo, Taisho, Meiji etc)

I've played some games, but I'm curious if I've missed any good ones—recommendations are welcome!

Recently a new game by the same artist as Hakuoki came out (Homura)! There's also Winter's Wish out on Switch that fit a historical setting.

One game I like that fits what you're looking for is Getsuei no Kusari. It has gorgeous art and a dramatic plot. It's about a remote town living through a dark time, the story is pretty sad!

Recently a new game by the same artist as Hakuoki came out (Homura)! There's also Winter's Wish out on Switch that fit a historical setting.

One game I like that fits what you're looking for is Getsuei no Kusari. It has gorgeous art and a dramatic plot. It's about a remote town living through a dark time, the story is pretty sad!

I like all kinds of settings, and I'ma bit biased on mystery! But some of my favorites are in fact historical ;) they usually have gorgeous character designs.

Seconding the Haruka series! Haruka 3 (Heian) is an absolute classic. Haruka 6 (Taisho) and Haruka 7 (Sengoku) are more beginner-friendly. Also, consider the Geten no Hana games (Sengoku).

If you're okay with non-jp historical, I'd rec My Vow to My Liege. The worldbuilding and story feels very grand and epic, kinda c-drama-ish if you know what I mean. The MC is also a highlight of the game, love love love her. Def one of the best MCs in otome games imo

I dont know too much mystery games, the only one that i remember is 7'scarlet i guess...
If you have a favorite mystery game please dont hesitate to recommend it!!

It's set in The Taisho Period, and the characters are really well-developed — you can even see the personalities and backstories of the love interests' mothers. If you don't mind a bit of a grind with the stat-raising and collecting, I'd really recommend giving it a try!
The other is Winter's Wish: Spirits of Edo. ''https://vndb.org/v29906 ''KimiYuki is set in the Edo period.

Since the characters fight vengeful spirits, the combat system follows an RPG-style format, but it's fairly simple. The story unfolds as events occur and the characters grow closer along the way.
As solarisa mentioned, the third, sixth, and seventh games in the series are well-received and easy to find.

There is also a title called "Kimi wa Yukima ni Koinegau," which is another Japanese-style fantasy romance adventure game. I haven't played it myself, but it seems to be a bittersweet story.

The writing is not always the best but I did find the setting really enjoyable.

I dont know if this sounds strange but i like bittersweet stories It leaves a stronger impression on me.

I support Haruka recommendations, it's a lot of great games. Bara ni kakusareshi Verite is about french revolution, same developer as with Hanayaka Nari. Geten no Hana is about Sengoku period (you can even romance Nobunaga)

For Historical otome games, cannot miss Harukanaru toki no naka series, it is a huge series, each with different historical periods, can pick any one that interested you to try. Personally, I like 5, same era as Hakuoki (i.e. Bakumatsu, even have a same character in Haruka 5 and Hakuoki, even though the personality is totallly opposite), and that period of Japan is really interesting, with a lot of conflict based on different perspective.

Chou no Doku Hana no Kusari has good writing and good character.

Meiji Tokyo Renka also a fun piece
