Have there been times when you just HAD to change a heroine's name?

Sooo as we all know, name-changing is a crucial mechanic in otome games for immersion purposes for those of us who self-insert or even just dislike default names. To each their own! As a self-inserter I always change the default name to my real one no matter the setting and that's how I have fun, but I was wondering...

Have you ever just *had* to change the default name for a different reason? I saw someone on another site commenting how they had to change a heroine's name because it was the name of someone they knew and it made them uncomfortable. Has something like this ever happened to you?

Honestly in my case, I feel awkward thinking about 9RIP's heroine with her default name because in my head, the name Misa is reserved exclusively for Misa Amane lmao the association is way too strong!!

I also always use the default name if it's voiced, if it's not voiced I use one of my own that I enjoy being called. Though I have changed one name before, it was the name of one of my siblings and hearing the love interests basically moan her name was uncomfortable 😫

Oh it was horrific! I remember there being kissing noises while they said her name and I was like no thank you, restarted halfway through the first route and never used that name again but it was forever stuck in my head haha.
 
Not really, but I think it's a bit funny when a character has a name similar to someone I know in real life! I haven't encountered a character that actually has the exact same name anyone I know until now though

I do however sympathize with anyone who need to change it to avoid the awkwardness haha
 
Had to? No, I don't think there was a time where I had to change the MC's name. I rarely do so nowadays, most of the MCs names are voiced so I love to hear the actor's saying the names with emotion, etc.

I have a friend who plays games with me, and once we encountered game where MC had the same name that my friend has. It was voiced, so we did not change it, but it was a weird experience

Many games also have pseudo-European settings, so it can happen to anyone, I think

i dont think ive encountered an otome protagonist with my name or my relatives name or my friends name yet.. that would be a double blow though because me and my best friend share the same name WW
my? our? name has an english analog, but it doesnt hit the same as a direct 1:1 spelling, you know? so luckily(?) ive yet to have such moment ww

For now, no, but i agree it's weird to hear a name that reminds you of someone close. Still, i like hearing LIs say the name, it makes the moment more memorable

Sometimes i wish there were a third option in the name settings, like using your chosen name but still hearing LIs say the default one lol

Oh actually I just remembered that I had a friend shared a name with an MC, I just said," Hey, this otome game I'm playing has the same name as you." But that was that, I didn't think of my friend when I was playing the game, I guess its easier for me to separate it. Although if it was with someone I DIDN'T like, then yeah I would change it haha.

If MC has a name, i play with default one! There haven't been any situations where I've needed to change the name yet. I think even if there is a situation where mc shares a name with someone i know, i can separate them and there won't be a problem

I always use the default name. I don't think there'll ever be a situation where I need to change it, but who knows! lol

Not really. I only change the name if the heroine don't have a name like Amnesia Memories, etc.
If the heroine have a default name, i never change that, because i want the LI call the heroine name for the fullest experience.

Coming back to this thread because as I was looking into even if tempest I realized the default name there is my niece's name....
She's a toddler...... Can't unread it....
 
Wow this is funny, there's a LI that has the same name as my friend, but I didn't really mind it since I didn't make that connection later on lol. This is the 2nd time this has happened to me, so I think I'm okay with not needing to change names or so. BUT I feel like it would make a difference if the name was of someone I didn't like.

I think the only time I would ever change a heroines name is if it was the name of like, my sister or mom, because it would be so creepy for an LI to be saying he loves my sister or mom even though I know it's towards the character, it's still... lol. Otherwise I always keep the default name. If they don't come with a default name, I just choose a name I like, never my own.
 
I use the default name, and for games where a default name isn't provided I'll just come up with a name I like and treat the MC like an OC. I think the only time I would HAVE to change the default name is if I have bad associations with it, but fortunately I haven't come across anything like that yet.
 
I used to change the names when I was younger, but I like to use their default now!
If they no default name, I usually make one up based on how they look really!
 
No, I don't think so - I always chose default name. I think it might be an issue for people who know someone with those names, but I doubt I'll find a game with Polish names ;).
I think the only game where the main character had a name closest to mine—and where that name was actually spoken aloud—was Potionomics.
