Do you play R18 Otome Games?

I don't see much discussion about R18 otome around here, not sure if they're just not popular (there's barely any translated titles) or people are just more cautious talking about them

I'm curious, do you play R18 otome? I've played some (Fashioning Little Miss Lonesome, Persona Opera Za no Kaijin, Jooubachi no Oubou, Under the Moon), and I do enjoy them (I play eroge after all lol) but I think they don't give me the same feelings traditional otoge do. I wonder if it's because they're more niche and the routes have faster pacing? They also seem "cheaper", and most are from smaller companies.

Also wondering about console-only players: would you play a R18 otoge, or are you just not interested in them at all?

I've played a few!

Chou no doku, koezaru are my two favorites but there others I want to try too.
I really enjoyed Chou no Doku too! The h-scenes were very tasteful, and they fit well in the routes (Mizuhito's route had some gorgeous CGs in the h-scenes!). I've played some with scenes that come out of nowhere, and it always gives me whiplash haha

Funny that you mention those two, both got English translation on Switch and PC, but with a censored PC release lol. I get that the companies probably don't want to translate the extra content, but when you look at R18 otome in English, there's just a bunch of MTL. The lack of localizations probably play on the lack of popularity too ;(
I do play in Japanese sometimes, but it'd be nice to have more English-spaces to discuss them (also because I'm not confident at all in my Japanese output lmao 🫣 )

Chou no doku is on my pc I am gonna play it someday hehe.
But I played heartcage what is indie tome +18 so yeah!

I played a few. the last one I played was yoshiwara higanbana. I don't actively search for 18+ otome but I enjoy them if it's done well. Chou no doku comes to mind as well. I also tried out The Crimson Flower but I didn't really enjoy it.
Another game that comes to mind is cursed covenant. It's an amare game because you can choose the genders of the li and protagonist. But I thoroughly enjoyed it. Ngl the story had me in tears. would recommend. The 18+ scenes are interactive too😖

not a lot to be honest! im kinda picky about my female-oriented smut, and sadly not a lot of games, especially doujin games, pass my harsh inspection lolol, and overall i tend to think sex is pretty cringe so i usually avoid reading h scenes in eroge altogether. unless its nukige obviously, but i dont think there are that many nukige otome.. hmm

I've played quite a lot, probably over 20 titles, and I've tried almost all the somewhat well-known ones.
I think the main reason R18 otome games are rarely discussed is that most of them are only available in Japanese.
Additionally, the scenarios in R18 otome games are generally weaker; the content is either relatively short or mainly serves the 18+ elements, so the story itself doesn't leave much of an impression.
As a result, what players remember most tends to be either the erotic scenes or some grotesque moments, which makes the points of discussion rather limited.

Interactive h-scenes are always a treat haha. Some are pretty immersive (but most of the time they're a bit awkward or silly!)

Most stuff on the doujin side are pretty short and kinda indulgent (in a good sense!) so it's harder to find the specific stuff that you like. Now, I can't really think of any nukige otoge, except maybe a rare few femdom/het otokonoko short games... although I'd have a hard time calling them otome specifically. They just feel like female MC + one male character.
I play plenty of R18 stuff (although I started in VNs with otoge, I got really into it with BL and eroge), but to be fair, most of them are pretty cringy lol (I've played Tsukihime and PC-98 eroge... it's an experience for sure)

Yeah, most R18 tend to come out from smaller companies, so they have a lower production value overall. These games will try to compensate with the h-scenes, but it just ends up feeling rushed! There's also the fact that those games will have fewer routes, usually around 3 LIs, compared to mainstream otoge that can have around 5 or 6. Most otome players interested in R18 titles are probably into BL as well, so the market is pretty niche :(

I would kill (okay maybe not literally) for more animated R18 female-oriented games. Cursed Covenant was so peak with the interactions. The developer has an upcoming R18 game called Voiceless Elegy that also has animations, the female MC is customizable too.

I don't know who's the one drawing the characters and doing animations, but they're good at their job. I've seen animations from other games where the characters look like breathing balloons.

to be clear i have nothing against eroge/nukige as a whole, its just the little goblins in my head that prevent me from seeing sex as something meaningful. i also hate how people use the "well the sex scenes in eroge are actually great for character development and they can hold a ton of meaning for the character arc and the entire plot" argument because to this day i still havent read a single eroge where that would be true. having sex scenes for fanservice is not bad, and you dont have to go out of your way to defend them!! that said, i would be more than glad to read a vn where this would actually be the case w
anyway i checked the otome + nukige combo on vndb (obviously excluding amare and ai), and the results arent great.. as expected haha. there are some high production ones however! specifically kusunoki yashiki no monogatari (oh how i yearn for a new pilvamp title), kankinkon (which is based on r18 voice drama), hatsukare ecchi (also based on r18 voice drama), and this.......... the absolute most of them are indeed indies though

I saw it! I'm probably going to play it when the full game is out. It'll take a while. It looks promising and I know the devs will deliver with the plot. curious about the new artstyle and how the 18+ interactions will play out.

It really depends, 18 plus horror ones? Love them.

If it's a sexual 18 plus I do but a few 18 plus otome games I've seen tend to overly sexualise the protagonist and almost make her so placid and insecure about sex. If I play an 18 plus otome I want an adult like protagonist who actually can take some control?

I confess that I've tried playing games like Love Unholyc, Valkyrie Hearts, and What in Hell is Bad, but even before reaching any steamy scenes in all the games I mentioned, I always ended up closing the app and uninstalling them because I felt extremely embarrassed, lol. I know it sounds silly, but I really can't progress without feeling embarrassed. I think those types of games are too much for me. My limit is games like Diabolik Lovers, Olympia Soiree, CupiPara, and Chou no Doku (the censored Nintendo Switch version). That's where I draw my tolerance line (and even then, I've had some difficulty progressing through the story without feeling embarrassed)

Rin/Chihaya from Yoshiwara Higanbana is a pretty good protagonist if you're looking for a mature and confident mc. She's an oiran so she's refined and elegant too. She accepts the reality of her line of work. She's a great protagonist imo!

I'll have a look, thank you!

Oh I'm with you on that lol (now a bit off-topic) I'm not particularly into the sex scenes for development myself (I think a lot of people just feel embarrassed about h-scenes to admit is fanservice lol), and I also don't really attribute much meaning to them :b (I do like seeing the art though... it's kinda how I feel about gore VNs lmao I think it looks interesting). I can't really think of any eroge with particularly meaningful sex scenes myself... some that I like just use them to maybe complement the setting or for impact (like in horror eroge), but not essential at all. I've seen people talk about SubaHibi and Soukou Akki Muramasa in that regard, and although I thought the scenes weren't totally unnecessary, I wouldn't say they moved the plot per se (except maybe SubaHibi, but even then...)

That first one looks pretty interesting! A pervert MC sounds fun, I'll have to check out myself ;). The two based in voice dramas I was familiar with, and Himetai is... a game (lol)

Haha, not silly at all! Even I have a hard time with some titles, and I'm well acquainted with eroge games lmao sometimes the voice acting is just too enthusiastic for me (and I'm the type of weirdo that sent KLAP and Jooubachi no Oubou screenshots to my unsuspecting friends)

Diabolik Lovers is one that kinda tethered on the line, the binaural audio is a bit much for me! And Laito definitely didn't help lol Olympia Soiree can be a bit lewd at times too!

subahibi is just scajis barely disguised fetish the game, seeing how he tweets about futanari all day every day LOL. obviously im not saying its bad though! creators should totally have their artistic freedom to do whatever:D sigh i really need to hop on subahibi, but that comes after tsui no sora, but my endless backlog........... and the total lack of walkthroughs online.................. siiiiigh............................

i heard that alice=alice is pretty much a softcore dramacd with all the kissing noises lol, so maybe you could try it out as well? ww

Yes, I've played (and loved) R18+ games a lot. I don't know if you've noticed, but in my case, I find they tend to be more romantic and develop the relationship and drama more. They also tend to have darker themes or a deeper dark romance (focusing more on jealousy and problems) in the protagonists' relationship/dating/marriage, unlike regular games where the story is more the main focus and there are moments of relationship development before the confession.

The titles I've played are Ijiwaru My Master, Kankinkon (all its versions), Under the Moon, Koezaru wa Akai Hana, Kuro to Kin no Akanai Kagi, Trick or Alice, Pretty Witch Academy, PersonA -Opera Za no Kaijin-, among others.

i haven't... i don't really go out of my way to play r18 stuff, i think. i'm also part of the ppl who find it kinda embarassing </3 but it depends on how interested/curious i am about the game, i might try one in the future. i've played some r18 blvns bc it feels unavoidable so w/e... with otome games i get the impression i have more options so not yet!

and.. hmm.. i've read sayooshi. for the psychological horror of it all (and bc i'm a terribly curious person lol) and it rewired my brain but i can't say i liked any of those scenes - they were intentionally disturbing. might not reread it ever again 👍

And here I am, too embarrassed to even leave my house to buy bread at the corner bakery or to say good morning to the mailman, lol. You're the enemy of shame, I would never have that audacity.

While playing Laito's route, I had to lower the volume a few times because Daisuke Hirakawa is so good that just his voice makes you feel embarrassed, lol.

I've been kinda curious about R18 otome too, mostly because I'm really into pretty art styles, so I ended up trying a few lol.
The first one I ever played was Under the Moon!

I've tried some (Enkan no Memoria, Kuro to Kin no Akanai Kagi). The art was beautiful, story - not so much. I also noticed that r18 games more often have voiced MC, wish that non-r18 games also had voices
