What lengths have you gone to get an older otome game working?

Sometimes, it feels like with older games, you have to go to the capital of a country whose name you cannot even pronounce to find a single post-it note 3 hallways into a back alley that will tell you the secret to getting an older game to work, and then it still somehow doesn't work.

What odd situations have you had to get into in order to get an older otome game you wanted to play working?

Hm... The most I've done was set up a Virtual Machine for older otome games. But the scary thing for me is trying to extract data files. It is almost impossible to fully extract Pretty☆Witch☆Academy! because it uses .rio files... And rUGP engine is made out of hopes and dreams that deciphering things other than CGs, Character Sprites, and Backgrounds is a nightmare.

I messed up my computer and it got hacked (Thank goodness it only had anime pictures, games, and the MMD works) my screen turned red and a warning message appeared saying my computer had been hacked and that something bad would happen to it if I shut it down (and since I didn't have anything personal on it, I shut it down immediately). I didn't turn it on until a few days later, and it was working normally again, i checked everything and it was fine I'm not sure what happened, comments said it worked for them so i probably did something wrong (⁠ ⁠；⁠∀⁠；⁠) this happened around 2017

Is there a "savedata" folder in the same location as the exe file?
If not, please try creating one.

That's my worst nightmare xD
The worst thing that I ever downloaded was a virus that would close everything I tried to open, my computer had to be reset, luckily I also didn't have anything important in it

A PC game I bought a long time ago, "The Black and Gold Unlockable Key," stopped working after I switched PCs.

I applied the official patch, but it didn't fix the problem, so I've given up...

The best situation is when you can at least find both the device and second hand copy for sale. Besides this official approach though, I've tried to create many different accounts in forums that solve certain bugs and tried many tools to extract data if running the game is too challenging.

just wondering why did you have to set up a virtual machine? i want to play otome games is that a common thing?

It's a little embarrassing, but I actually bricked my laptop for the same reason a long time ago. Now I'm much more cautious with anything I download, like checking reviews and scanning things with my antivirus. Can't afford to brick my computer again.

Not really an answer to your post but I miss the time installing VNs was hard, when official translations basically didn't exist and you had to change local, crack the game, patch it, sometimes patch the patch... XD I should try to install an older game just to experience that sweet pain again.

sometimes the older games aren't completely compatible with newer windows it seems so I had to search for a win8rar file but also trying to set up vnr and find hook codes for translation as well as proper download links
