How do you guys feel about rival characters? Does it bother you when another girl is trying to get with your LI and keep you away from him?

Agreed. I love BL, I've engaged in tons of that content, but I don't want it mixed into my otoge if it's clear he's trying to get in the way of the heroine's love. If he has feelings for the LI but doesn't interfere then I don't mind, but Hugo was genuinely such a shitty person in Yves' route and I hated every time he came on screen. Like I was genuinely getting angry LOL.

same same!! i also read a lot of bl, but i think genres should be properly separated:( you wouldnt want to see a straight romance drama in a bl, so why must otome girlies just shut up and take it? im glad the backlash worked at least.. but i guess only time will tell whether they actually learned their lesson:(

Totally! I will say though, I'm not totally sure they've learned their lesson completely... I'm playing Homura: The Crimson Warriors (also by Otomate) and there's a "bond" between two LIs that almost makes me feel like the heroine is secondary. Saying stuff like "you're the other half to my soul". Thankfully there's zero interference on either side, but if they were going for a brotherly bond then I think they missed the mark lol.

It's actually only in one route! The rest of the game is fantastic. The other LI involved is way lighter on those themes for some reason lol. It's not actually featured much in the story besides Juzo's (the LI)'s route so you don't have to worry ^^ Feel free to skip it anyway, I just wanted to warn you!

Yw!!! Hopefully Otomate will work out with this stuff in the future tho. The issue with stories with devotion is that it's too easy to accidentally slip into romance :/ There's a fine line between "i'm devoted to you and will give up my life for you because i admire and care about you" versus "i'm devoted to you and will give up my life for you because i'm secretly in love with you" LOL

yes!!!;;; and because of these incidents you kinda cant help but be wary/suspicious when engaging with other works, which might affect your enjoyment as well. like, are you just good friends? or is there something going on behind my back? am i a heroine or a sidekick to a tragic couple in whats supposed to be my own story??;;
im all for lis interacting with each other/side charas and stuff, like i dont actively look for their complete isolation (well maybe a little hehe), but maybe the arrow should be pointed at the heroine at all times..... because thats the entire point of the genre......... its like buying a totally normal game but then getting flashbanged by untagged ntr..............;;;;

I completely agree but... omfg, I literally HATE ntr. All cheaters need to explode NOW

I think manga and games where a rival shows up are outdated, and since I've seen so many of them myself, I'm just bored with them now.
 
Another one I remembered would be Rika from Mystic Messenger.... In that case, i don't dislike her as a rival (despite her hateful attitudes towards V and Ray🫠😭). But I still need to go through V's route to understand more about her ;u;'

I'm afraid that V's route will make me feel sorry for her, and feel bad about V leaving her to be with MC. Even though it's not a new game, I haven't read anything about this route, I've just done the others, and I don't know what I'll find there.
 
I haven't encountered it that many times, and I currently don't mind it. But I also haven't played any of the Toki maki games where it seems to lean harder in this direction.

Ive encountered it in Angelique Luminarise, 9RIP, Unlogical and Amnesia. I was the most bothered by it in Angelique Luminarise where the rivals asks the guys out on a date!! But luckily it didn't rly develop into anything and just fizzled out, and later I also warmed up to the rival when she was nice to me lol.
I feel like as long as the LI chooses me, I don't mind this dynamic that much.
 
most of the time it's a non issue but when I played tokimeki memorial girls side I was distraught that you could get ntr'd as a feature lol
