How do you guys feel about rival characters? Does it bother you when another girl is trying to get with your LI and keep you away from him?

I dislike love triangles in general, so this trope is a no-go for me. Unless it's in a game like Tokimeki with heavier gameplay mechanics. I don't like when women are pitted against each other, and the LI almost never reacts well...

In general I'm kind of neutral, if it's a well written character or we get a bit more backstory beyond an obviously annoying stereotype. If the character is there obviously stereotypical / caricature like, then I just get annoyed at the writers/producers LOL

I'm not a fan of that kind of setup. It feels disrespectful to both the heroine and the rival characters in the game. There's really no need to rely on that sort of trope just to make the male lead seem more charming. :akazukin_dead:

i like the ones in tmgs because you can be their friends and you also have a cute ending with them!! and there are runs where it's avoidable for them to be your rivals as well.

Amnesia and GS series were my starters so ya I'm used to and enjoy those scenarios.

However looking back how Hugo (male sub) got flammed harshly in Virche, I could get the idea that rivals aren't really a good idea for otomes.

Not totally bothered, I would say. The other rival makes for a good drama in the route. But it does bore me when the LI is still indecisive about his feelings towards the MC because of the other girl/s. (Looking at Ikki from Amnesia: memories)

as for me, I don't mind rivalry as long as they're not my friends first rivals later like in Tokimeki ealier series. That was annoying. But in like Storm Lovers, I don't mind much since I'm not close friends with them.

it wasnt just because he was a rival, but because he added bl elements to an otome game, something that does not belong to the genre. moreover, he was extremely harsh towards the heroine, yet somehow she even encouraged him to explore his feelings? towards the poster boy too? the one who was supposed to be extremely in love with the heroine? it just felt like the writer wanted really really hard to insert her fujoshi fantasies into an otome title, and the higher ups somehow didnt see the issue, even though its a massive taboo in japan to mix the genres. the backlash was totally and completely justified

I actually think it can be cool, but only if the protagonist isn't a pushover about it. Some indie games have this dynamic but the MC actually claps back and puts the jealous girl in her place, so in that case I don't mind it at all

yeah most of the time that's a turn off for me too. i don't mind a bit of rivalry, but in the end (mostly) competing character will behave in irritating way

It's annoying sometimes and it can make or break the route depending on how the story is written.

To be honest, I'm not a fan of rivalries between the MC and other female characters, especially when the rival is written to be annoying or stupid. It feels like those characters are just made to make women hate each other, and it makes me wonder if they're even necessary in otome games. I once saw a game where the love interest actually gets taken away by the rival; I was really looking forward to his route, but I just gave up on playing it altogether. 😒

Not a fan of rival chars, I find it annoying or if you end up losing friendship with a girlfriend over a guy I dislike that.

I don't think I've ever played a game with that mechanic before but I am about to start Storm Lover KaiandI know it exists in that game similarly to the first Tokimemo games, but it's different from a normal visual novel. I'm not too excited forit though as I enjoyed TMGS3 a lot and it doesn't have rivals, only besties, I think that's much more feminist than having girls fight over a guy like a basic shounen romance anime lol

I get jealous when my favorite character and their rival get along!
However, I do like it when that leads to my favorite character and the protagonist becoming closer!

I really hate this type of plot. It feels like a cheap way to add some type of plot to the overall storyline. Personally it also makes me so disinterested in de male character if they don't notice it or if they entertain it. I also really dislike this trope in anime and manga so I stay far away from it.

I feel like it rarely happens... But the one in TMGS 1-2 can be annoying gameplay-wise because you have to be more careful balancing hanging out with them/ignoring them to make sure the fallout won't impact your playthrough.

Otherwise, if the game can justify the rival... I wouldn't mind it so much.

This trope feels like it's died out in the world of otome games (which makes it funnier how all those villainess reincarnations LN/manga seems to think its a huge staple) but for the most part, I don't really care or like the trope unless the rival actually has development, which honestly usually they never do or it's just sped through at the end of a route. I love it when a rival character actually becomes endeared to the mc and they end up friends, i think its very cute

I think what really sucked is that i liked Hugo in the other routes, but the way he acted towards Ceres in Yves' route geniunely was horrible and never sat well with me, and honestly ruined his entire character for me. Such a shame because other than him, I really did love Yves' route. it kinda sucks that companies STILL haven't learned not to do this

i think they did learn.. or at least are learning slowly..... (which is wild because theres literally nothing to learn!)

there was a statement in wakudeki (omegaverse otome) twitter about there being no same-sex couples, and crazy chain's release date got pushed too, which many think is because the writer, which is the same as virche, added bl elements again, which is why they now have to rewrite some parts. this is all pure speculations though, so please dont quote me on that w!

so like, i dont know if its true, but i kinda hope that the same doesnt happen with sullyland (theres a male side character who praises one of the lis a lot) and record noah (which has a writer who wrote several bl works in the past). otome lovers have it very hard ever since the start of the year, thanks to grmn and animate................

i'm glad japanese fans aren't letting it slide in the slightest, i really like the writer for virche but geniunely can't blame jpn otome players for saying that they won't buy her works anymore. you have to put your foot down at some point.

i think we can only hope that otomate and voltage don't try to yaoibait. garumani still hasn't properly apologised yet so the last thing we need is to add gasoline to this fire

im afraid this is never gonna happen at this point because not only they actively refuse to apologize and make threats of legal actions towards those who criticize them, but also they just keep adding more and more bl tropes and elements in their audios. first it was younger brother's bully (why couldnt he be the heroine's bully, which is something way more appealing for the audience?), then one male character puts a chastity belt on another male character (why couldnt the heroine do it?), and for their new audio theres apparently egg-laying through the anus (why not vaginal egg-laying, which is very common for hentai?)?? overall it sounds like something extremely ominous is coming to the otome section........ which is extremely depressing;;;;

Agreed. I love BL, I've engaged in tons of that content, but I don't want it mixed into my otoge if it's clear he's trying to get in the way of the heroine's love. If he has feelings for the LI but doesn't interfere then I don't mind, but Hugo was genuinely such a shitty person in Yves' route and I hated every time he came on screen. Like I was genuinely getting angry LOL. That's why I rarely ever replay Yves' route, even though I like him a lot.
