Has anyone else started learning Japanese just for otome?

Me too started my japanese journey with otome games! Now I can read medium-hard otome without many lookups, so I understand like 80%. I was eventually in Japan for three years, but it was hectic in there so I was not playing otome, and now 復活！So I have been studying japanese for like 10 years not actively but still

I started because of novel in general. But funny thing is after about half a year I found out immersion is not the best way to learn for me personally and instead I learn faster from textbook

hm? but immersion isn't really for learning, it's rather for practicing what you've already learned from textbooks :unsure: it should go hand in hand together, at least that's what i think and what helped me

Probably that's where I went wrong. I kinda jump straight into VN just after finished kaishi 1.5k and I found it a bit too overwhelming 🥲 So I went back to study textbook
 
I did. Well it was a combination of different reasons but otome games and visual novels in general played a big part. There are too many untranslated games, even though companies are localizing more works now, the less popular ones or doujin games still get shoved to the side.
I prefer picking what I want to play on a whim and not waiting hoping praying manifesting for a translation...
 
Same for me. I found the drama cds really helping with the listening, but my reading skills is like really bad though haha
 
I didn't start to learn Japanese for VNs only but somehow vns just made me learn a little bit of it!! It was actually kind of refreshing to see my little but still "a progress" as I realized that I can catch more of the simple sentences and words by ear (●'▽'●)ゝAnd now it's a bit easier to navigate through texts c:
 
I went a step farther!
I got a CONSOLE. Taught myself to jail break it. Played the game while trying to figure out what was going on. And then went to freaking J a p a n so that I can keep on learning more of the language + play more of the games lol
 
I started studying Japanese because I became interested in BL games and Otome games a lot, but listening, speaking, and reading are okay, but it's not easy to write. I think Chinese characters are definitely difficult.
 
To be precise, I started learning Japanese because of Japanese anime and otome games, and I plan to travel to Japan in the future, so I also want to learn some to facilitate my future interpretation of Japanese！

Meeee!!!! i started learning japanese also because of japan's visual novels. I can read hiragana, katakana i still struggle a little bit, but when playing the games, most of the time i can understand what they are saying because of watching a lot of anime and japanese music lol
 
At first, I tried to learn even just the basic vocabulary. But I ended up relying on translation apps, so I gave up.
 
Of course! To be able to play newly released otome games (most of which are only available in Japanese), I studied Japanese hard. Now, while I can understand most sentences, I still have a lot of trouble with katakana!:boys_headache:
 
I started to learn japanese a few years ago, I know hiragana and katakana but I stopped learning japanese after a few kanjis like maybe around 30 , my brain just doesn't want to cooperate , I know basic grammar too. I am at beginner level . I understand more spoken japanese after my years of watching anime and jdrama than reading anyway . Maybe I will continue later .
 
I started learning english 2 years ago because of otome games and cute boys. Now I'm learning japanese for the same reason. Turns out not all japanese games are translated into english
I felt scammed
(I don't regret it though)

I honestly want to try and start to learn esp with the amount of otome gems that are not localized but I don't know even when or how to start. Wouldn't it be also a bit hard to learn since you're not really going to be using it in daily life.

The discord has lots of resources for that, just 15 mins a day. If you only want to read you only need to practice reading and listening comprehension :)
 
I am! I actually took Japanese classes in university (it was a breadth requirement to take classes in a different language) and I did decently well. Not well enough to actually be able to play a whole untranslated game though.

huh... and here i am, the one who started playing them as soon as i learned hiragana and katakana... :unsure:

use that foundation to dive in! we have tools on the discord to learn as you play and small classes

well, my experience may or may not work for you, who knows... i just treated the game as a learning material and at the same time i treated the learning process itself as a game: i load up a game, then grab my notebook, and write down every new word i come across, and by the end of the game i get quite a lot of words i know for sure, cause the game's been repeating them a lot, and my brain got used to see and hear them
mind you, this cannot replace the textbooks, but it's a nice way of reminding your brain why you learn the language in the first place, cause the brain is lazy most of the time and doesn't want to learn things that it doesn't recognize as necessary :unsure:
