Breaking the fourth wall

It's April Fools in my timezone right now, so I was wondering. Fourth wall breaks are a common trope in many visual novels, and I've seen my fair share of them in otome and BL games as well.
Do you enjoy characters who break the fourth wall? Such as acknowledging the player on the other side of the screen, glitching graphics or games with routes that represent time loops.

I like these scenes in games like Hatoful Kareshi, Mystic Messenger and Taisho x Alice. There's also Misyr's comments in Cafe Enchante when you're not in his route that felt like a wink to the player for me!

Unfortunately, I don't remember seeing many of these scenes in otome games besides MysMe. Outside of otome games, I only remember seeing it in DDLC, Undertale, Metal Gear, and Miside. I'd like to see more fourth-wall breaks in otome games! (I'm even playing the last game you mentioned, but I don't remember that character making comments like that that break the fourth wall. And now I'm even more eager to play the third game you mentioned, but I can't find it anywhere to download in English ༼;´༎ຶ ۝ ༎ຶ༽)

I wouldn't say the comments are explicitly 4th wall breaks! More of a little nudge to the player, like saying that he "helps his rivals" and not being his chance with the MC "yet". When you finish your second and third routes these little scenes are more obvious :)

The English addon of Taisho x Alice is a DLC for the game! The vndb page says it's freeware, maybe try to add it into your account?

Add it to this VNDB account? If that's the case, I don't have an account since I don't have a decent PC :( I don't even know what this site is, to be honest XD

Try to add it to your Nintendo account (the one associated with your Switch), tapping the "Nintendo" link on the vndb page will open the DLC page on the Nintendo store! I believe you need the store region to be USA.

Edit: vndb stands for Visual Novel Database. I use it to track the VNs I played! It's very useful to check for information regarding all sorts of VNs, including otome, like official links and character info :)

But can I do this with a jailbroken Switch? Won't it cause problems?

Did you buy Taisho x Alice from the store? Or did you install it from another source? If that's the case, simply get the DLC file from one of the sites you usually get games from and install it on the Switch! Mine's jailbroken as well lol I just assumed you bought the game. If you still have trouble feel free to message me and I can try to help you out!

Oh, how I wish I could buy the game. Here where I live, otome games are a rip-off, so unfortunately I have to resort to other sources :( I downloaded the DLC from a website—I don't remember which one now—and installed it with the base game that I had downloaded from another site, but the game remained in Japanese and asked me to buy something if I wanted to change the language. I even tried searching here on AS a few weeks ago, but from what I saw in the most recent comment, the person had the same problem as me, so I figured I had to buy the game to play it in English.

my favorite approach to fourth wall breaks is always when theyre done similarly to ddlc since it isnt just for a one liner or something done for comedic effect which is why it sticks with me more and feels unnerving ^^ not sure about english releases but there are love interests in folie fatale and inkyara lovecome who fall into this category and i REALLY adored how it was done in folie fatale since the game itself is very menhera in nature so it felt like a clever use of it :D

i do love it when it's comedically too though ig most commonly its when a character is like "oh you should probably save right now" and i immediately end up making a save file out of sheer fear T__T like yes boss whatever you say T__T

You need to download the base game, DLC and 1.0.2 update file. It would be best to get them all from the same source to make sure it works properly!

I really like the omake at the end of games where the cast has a discussion on the plot and their roles where they break the 4th wall, like in ChouDoku and Gin no Kanmuri. Otherwise I'm not very familiar with them happening midgame outside the vns you mentioned haha

Haha I've been interested in Folie Fatale for a while (I love messy, menhera characters), but my backlog is just wayyy too big. I will get there eventually!! For English titles, I think Cheritz has 4th wall breaks in their translated PC titles

I think an otome title with Totono style fourth-wall breaks would be very interesting... or maybe something akin to the Zero Escape games. For a genre with a huge self-insert player base, breaking the 4th wall is not as common as you would imagine!

ughhh YESSS I love it sooo much!! Unfortunately its so uncommon! The only instance that comes to mind is the extra voices in Over Requiem Z. Some of the voices broke the fourth wall and they were soooo good!! I was looking at some of the comments and it seems like some other games that are in my wishlist do this too. I hope more games do this. Its sooo much fun.:kurochan_kyaa:

I've searched extensively for all this time but haven't found a single site that has everything together, so I tried downloading the base game but it always stops halfway through. It's official, this game just doesn't want to be played by me, lol.

I can't really remember the last time an otome did this but I honestly wish they did it more! The concept of playing an otome and suddenly having one LI be super 4th wall breaking like ddlc levels would be sooo fun to play. Honestly wish they had more horror themed otomes lol
