Has anyone else started learning Japanese just for otome?

I've been learning japanese through my college classes offered and my main reason is literally to play untranslated otome. There are so many otome out there that aren't translated and are highly loved and I want to experience them LOL. The otome that made me desperately want to learn japanese is Yoshiwara Higanbana and my goal is to eventually be able to play it one day!

Me!!! I started because I wanted to play Dance with Devils (but in the end I gave in and started playing already lmao, just with a dictionary and google translate at hand)

Yeah i started two days ago. It's difficult, but I hope that someday I will be able to read it fully in Japanese.

I actually did that=)) I majored in Japanese just because I wanted to play otome games, but for various reasons, I only made it to the intermediate level=))

Just with intermediate level you could continue with immersion learning, reading slowly with a on screen dictionary, I was similar -- and I went from N3 to about N2~1 after 2 years of doing immersion learning this way.

I tried but I feel like my hobby is so diverse so its hard to focus at one

I'm doing so right now. At the start, learning japanese seems like this impossible mountain that you'll probably never be able to climb, but honestly it gets much better with time. Finishing your first otome in japanese is such a nice feeling!

I think the day i was able tor read an otome naturally on switch with 0 support, I was SOO happy, it was amazing to see what 5 months of study had achieved for me. And i was even able to pick up on all the subtle dialogue humor.

No support after 5 months is really impressive!! I'm only around the upper N3 level right now, so I still need to look up words quite a bit.
I'd say aside from immersion the most important part is not to lose motivation and staying dedicated, and celebrating even the small wins helps immensly in my experience!

Did you check out the immersion learning tools? Highly recommend Game Sentence miner if you play on PC.

It's a very very very slow process with me, but I did start for otome games. kinda. there's so many visual novels I want to read, so the desire goes far beyond just otome games! (˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶)

i did this with eroge and now i'm moving on to otome games. the immersion makes me learn way faster lol

I've never studied Japanese formally, but I have good listening skills. I can understand over 90% of the voice acting in games, and more than 60% of the text just from the language sense I've picked up over time. I'm really bad at reading full katakana, though.

The best way to learn katakana and hiragana is just to sit down and for 10-20 mins every day for a week do repetition of flash cards.

This is literally the reason I learned japanese seriously. The amount of localized title back when I got into otome games are very low 😭

I'm happy there are a lot of localized titles now though!
The downside is you notice all the bad translations now...

OMG this is so true

I'm motivated to learn JP yeeaaarss ago because I wanted to understand the game I played, it started with himehibi, I kinda brute forced the game by voice vibes and limited JP I know from watching too much anime, then I saw Garnet Cradle, and the art and music was so entrancing for me I decided to learn kanji haha

definitely me, i absolutely started learning japanese because there weren't enough translated otome games at the time. so i decided to learn it myself and i did. not good at speaking or writing it though, but my main objective was to understand it, so it's still a win

I've started learning Japanese recently just to read the 9Rip sequel. It's so difficult for me, I cried when I failed a test LOL. But I won't give up, I need to see what happens.

i actually learnt Japanese purely from otome games 😭 that shit is EFFECTIVE i tell you.

Hello :) I also studied on my own to play Japanese games, but it wasn't easy... I'm playing with a translator after all!
