Hey guys, which PC programs can I use to get an auto translate window as I play the games?
Can you also explain what hook codes are and how to find them?
I found Translumo-v.0.9.6 which is simple and I like that, but it's not auto translating and the translations aren't the best.
TBH the best translating software I've seen is legit chatgpt.

You know, studying Japanese would be a better use of your time, energy, and willpower. That or with the help of DeepL and JPN-ENG dictionary app. Putting the effort to learn a complicated program first, only for the sake of translating some texts after, is a cumbersome and roundabout way to reach your destination.

Eventually you'll run into this exact same problem, for each and every Japanese content you consume (not only VNs). The terms they use for VNs are generally pretty casual and simple to understand (except for the infodumping they do in worldbuilding-heavy settings). Not only that, you won't need to wait for things to be translated ever again.

If you're an avid and heavy consumer of Japanese content, studying the language would be a worthwhile investment. I can vouch for it's worth, despite the challenges. The faster you start, the better.

I don't want to learn Japanese. I am fine with machine translations, even if they may be bad at times, they aren't horrendous (especially gpt, wish there was an app that included it), I just don't know which programs can give me a transparent chat box above the basic in-game chat box and automatically translate the text on the fly as I click around in the game.

So which app doesn't require me to idk select text constantly so it translates, but rather it scans an area that I pre-define (can be whole screen, can just be chat box area) and translates the text automatically every time it changes?

Some online translation services and dictionary apps, offer visual input to translate texts for you in real time. You just have to install the app in your smartphone, give the app permission to access your camera, and hover them to the text on your PC screen.

That's what I used to do before I start to learn Japanese a few years ago.

I don't play on phone tho. I said app because it was shorter than program xd I need it for windows. Functionally Translumo-v.0.9.6 works how I like, you drag an area you want to translate hit a button combo to scan then a button combo to translate. Could be better if there was automation, but yeah. Though, effectively it doesn't provide good translations, which I assume has to do with the fact that backgrounds might be treated like noise, or that one wasn't made with japanese games in mind.

No, no, no. That's not what I said. I mean, you play the VN on your PC, and use your smartphone only for the translation app. You just hover your smartphone to your screen with your hand, no program or codes involved. It's just analog stuff, nothing complicated.

But no matter what you do, it's machine translation. Sure, MTL had improved compared to what it was, but it's still not good enough just yet. That's why I recommend you to just study Japanese. If you gotta put in some effort either way, it's better to focus on what will be better for you on the long term.

Yeah, I'd rather put effort with the MTL's haha. So what are hookcodes and why do I see everyone asking for them?
