I guess you need the right tools then.
I just do the basics :p
its a pop out render
make the background then you have to cut various renders out and pop it out via photoshop.
I think that's just a render :p
not really a border.
you just cut it out :p
but the font is cool
not sure how he did that exactly but he must have some sort of tool.

You can add pictures to your group by clicking the button Add Pictures isn't it?
You can use bbcode in discussions as well, meaning that you can actually personalize it as much as a "normal thread" should be - going by your definition -
