I'm having trouble getting the game to run. Is their a special trick? Like renaming the exe or something similar. Using japanese system locale,

Well, just don't set the display language to Japanese as well :P Anyway, Honky-Tonk Pumpkin has the best releases among all the Atelier Kaguya sections. Don't you just love animated CG? And the characters are usually with awesome quality.

Basically you can't since they're not video animations but animated photos that the game can assemble and play like vids.
But if you really want them, you can extract first just the animated pics with KaguyaCut which gonna give you more or less 8 bmp pictures per animation, then convert them into gif and to finish convert your gif into avi, or mp4 or else format with lossless quality ;)
It represents pretty much a hard work then the easiest thing is using Fraps to get some video screens of your game.

Seems the newest version of the game engine is pretty strict about expecting Japanese settings - earlier AK/HTP games didn't seem to require all these settings. Fortunately we found this out with the demo a few weeks back.

Sorry for the year bump, but the animated scenes in game seem to be rather laggy. I've tried comparing them to the gif's online and they just don't seem to run as smooth. Any idea behind this?

You supposedly need to download a small patch from http://www.a-kaguya.com/products_HP/s_rental/download.html i think it's the file called: syaburarental_up01.zip
which should be further down on the page. I think it should fix your issue. Simply put the file in the appropriate folder (i e your install folder).

I don't have the game installed so I can't test it out myself. But I hope this helps.
