DMM and AUGUST's new free-to-play game, Iris Mysteria is out and stable (after the usual series of emergency maintenances), and since I rather like the game and have been spending an awful lot of time on it lately, here's a quick guide for anyone who's willing to get started.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You need a Japanese IP to play the game. You can use a proxy if you have one, but beware as the game will eat up your quota rather quickly (about 500MB per session). Head to tips for some advice on how to lower this usage a little.

Link : http://pc-play.games.dmm.co.jp/play/imys_r (R-18 version because who plays the all-ages one, right?)

After a (long, about 200MB) loading sequence, you should arrive at this screen :

Why play this game? It's free, it's pretty cute, is fully voiced by a fairly well-known cast (among erogamers at least), and unlocking character stories and ecchi scenes doesn't require an absurd amount of cash spent on its gachas.

I'll describe each screen in more details below, but know that the game is mainly about a back and forth between school, battles and costume upgrades.

Here you'll be training each of your characters, earning them some elements required to learn/improve skills and influencing how they act in battle.
Note that you don't get any costume XP, and that whatever costume is chosen doesn't matter.
Characters share their elements and behavior between all of their costumes.

First you need to assign each of the five members of the currently selected party to one of the five facilities:
From top left to bottom right, these train Strength (Red), Speed (Blue), Magic (Purple), All (Orange) and Luck (Yellow).
Training earns the characters some associated elements, their current reserve is shown under their portrait on the right.

Each facility also influences combat behavior, as described by the little icons below each facility image. These are:
Red :
攻撃 : Attack, character is more likely to attack and use attack skills in battle
挑戦 : Provoke : character is more likely to attack enemies with high HP

Blue:
全力 : Full Power : character is more likely to use skills in the first half of battle
複数 : Multiple Targets : character is more likely to use multi-target attacks

Purple:
節約 : Converse : character is more likely to only use skills in the second half of battle
堅実 : Reliable : character is more likely to target enemies with low HP

Orange:
攻撃 : Attack, character is more likely to attack and use attack skills in battle
挑戦 : Provoke : character is more likely to attack enemies with high HP
複数 : Multiple Targets : character is more likely to use multi-target attacks

Yellow:
守備 : Defense : character is more likely to use debuff or healing skills
単体 : Single Target : character is more likely to attack or use single target skills

The game recommends aiming for a combo of 全力 and 堅実, and I tend to agree, it works quite well.
Note that only two people at most can be assigned in one facility at the same time, and you need to assign everyone to start training.

Once everything is set up, hit the 配置決定 button, and you'll get to...

Choose who you want to visit. Visited characters earn a little bit of affinity as well as the elements.
Which facility you visit also determines which type of Poren you get, these will be used to upgrade costumes later.
A red (!) means you'll also see an event with one or two of the characters currently assigned there.
A yellow (!) means you'll see an event that you've already seen before.

After you choice is made, you'll get to the result screen below:

Just click to accept and start again from the beginning, for as long as you have APs left.
These APs regenerate at a 1 per 3 minutes rate, and you'll also get a refill when you king level increases.
You can also use stones to refill the meter if it runs out, if you're so inclined. I'd save them for summoning personally.
Here you'll be spending stones and coins to summon costumes for the various characters.

First one uses stones and guarantees rare costumes or above.
You can roll once for 300 stones or roll 11 times for 3000 stones, earning a little discount.
No guaranteed SR or anything, it's very possible to get all rares in a 11-successive-roll.
SSR rates are at 2%, and I've had one drop after 5 to 6 11-successive-rolls.

Second page uses coins to summon normal and up to rare costumes.
Same as before, 500 coins for a single roll or 5000 for 11 rolls in a row.
Note that as long as you get ANY costume for a character (N or R included), you can fully unlock this character's story, including two ecchi scenes.
Each costume also has its own set of scenes, one scene for N/R costumes, two for SR and three for SSR (among which one ecchi scene).

Last one is an event gacha that you can use only once, for 3000 DMM points, to get a guaranteed SSR as well as 11 rolls of the stone summoning.
Here you'll be following the main story of the game, and engage in battle against enemies.

First off, select the stage you want to go to. Note that each stage has a BP cost, although story-only stages cost 0.
BPs, same as APs, regenerate at a 1 per 3 minutes rate, and you also get a refill when the king level goes up.
You can also refill BP by spending stones if you really want to.

Once you've chosen your stage, it's time to...

Choose the party that will be participating in battle, if there is any.

Once you're done, you'll be transported to the story part if the stage has one.

These are fully voices and feature the typical August camera angle and sprite works.

And if the stage has a battle in it, eventually you'll get to fight!

Battles are mostly automated and you have little control over what happens.
Each character slowly moves towards the center of the screen and once there, acts according to their combat behavior (see School for details).
If multiple characters are in the center area, a clash can occur and whichever side wins can perform a combo attack for usually devastating damage.
Sometimes, characters will use elements (earned in school) to learn/upgrade one of their skills, provided their behavior makes them use it.
The bar below each character is their ultimate charge, once full they have have a chance to use it when their turns arrives (but not guaranteed).
As king, your only power is your shield that you can activate once per wave. This shield will grant invincibility for one attack for each character.
Try to use it when characters are low on HP so they have time to be healed, or when you can see an enemy combo attack incoming.

For convenience sake, you can also speed up the fight and cut out the animations by using the two button on the top left.
If you lose, you can restart the wave with some bonuses by spending stones, or just give up.
Giving up does lose you the BPs you spent to enter the stage but that's about it.

If you win, you get either a continuation of the story, or get thrown directly into the results screen below:

Depending on how you did, you can get various rewards (one time per fight only).
The objectives to get S rank are :
-Don't use continues
-No ally died
-Didn't use the king's shield

Second part of the result screen shows the affinity and costume XP earned.

Click anywhere to get back to the stage selection screen.
Here you can view each character's profile, give them gifts and watch their stories.

First off, choose the character you want. New stories are marked with either a 'NEW' or a '!'.

Once a character is chosen, you get to see their profile.
You can click on the top left star to make this character your favorite, it will make her appear on the main page.
Apart from that, you have three options:

Presents lets you raise affinity by giving this character presents. Each character has their food preferences, but everyone loves parfaits.

Changing room lets you change the clothes of the character, for instance when she is shown on the front page.

Memories lets you review the events you've unlock for this particular characters.
These events are earned by reaching fixed levels of affinity, and these include two ecchi scenes, one at level 30 affinity and another at 100 affinity.

Costumes also have their associated events, and to unlock those you need to upgrade a costume a specific amount of times.
Here you can select the parties that will engage in school or battle activities.
You can have up to three parties, each of which containing up to five characters.

Changing characters is rather simple,

Just click on the character you want to change, choose the new one in the list on the right and hit the yellow '決定' on the bottom right to confirm.
Here you see a list of all the costumes you have unlocked, and can upgrade them using the Poren you earn in school or as battle rewards.

Clicking on the magnifying glass lets you see costume details.

The first page lets you check stats, battle behavior and the amount of elements the character has.
Battle behavior is shared between all costumes for a characters, but stats are not.

You can also check the various abilities of a costume, including:
Ultimate : a special skill that can be performed when the character's bar below her portrait is filled in battle.
Ability : usually triggers at the start of combat
Skills : each skill goes in either attack or defense category, and will be used depending on the character's behavior.

To get to the upgrading part, click on the "Dress Tree" button to get to this screen:

Here you can spend Poren to unlock various blocks, each giving stat bonuses in return.
Choose what block you want to unlock, and then click the green "開放" on the right.
Star blocks upgrade either the character's Ultimate or her Ability.
You can click further down on the tree to unlock multiple blocks at once.
Here you can review each event you're seen, including main story, specific event or affinity events.
Here you can take the gifts you earned as a login bonus, or by completing missions.

Just click Take Everything and you're done.
Here you can review the currently available missions.

First tab is daily missions. These are renewed everyday and are fairly quick to do (train in school 3 times, do 3 battles, give one present, etc...).
Second tab is weekly missions. Each week usually has the same missions as dailies, but with requirements set higher (do 10 battles, etc...).
Specific missions are more like milestones for achieving a certain level of progress (finish chapter 1, etc...)
Here you can change a few settings

If you use a proxy I recommend ticking the checkbox on the bottom left, that way you can disconnect from your proxy without making the game crash while waiting for AP/BP to regenerate.
Since the game uses a large amount of resources, loading can be very slow, especially if you're using a proxy to play.
The game is rather stable but it does sometimes crash, and reloading the whole thing can be very time consuming.
Using Firefox, you can set up the cache so that most of the resources will only be loaded one time.

First make sure you've enable the cache and set up the limit as high as you can. You'll need it.

Then hit about:config in the address bar, accept the warning and change the browser.cache.check_doc_frequency from 3 to 0, so that each resources is only loaded once per session (until you quit the browser). The game will still load slowly the first time, but subsequent ones will be much, much faster.
This will make other pages harder to refresh, but you can just hit Ctrl-F5 for your normal browsing to refresh manually.
That's it! I hope you enjoy the game as much as I currently do, and feel free to comment or ask questions if you have any.
