A lot of old games use MIDI sound, but newer versions of Windows have foolishly removed the volume controls for midi.

Worse yet, the default options for MIDI sound rather crappy.

There is a solution, however.

VirtualMIDISynth and MIDIMapper will restore MIDI options, and even let you use a custom soundpack for better sound!

They can be found and installed at http://coolsoft.altervista.org/en/virtualmidisynth and http://coolsoft.altervista.org/en/forum/thread/427

Use midimapper to switch default midi over to the new virtualmidisynth.

Make sure you have a soundpack installed (I use FluidR3_GM), and you're golden. Please share this info, as many have been having problems with midi support in old games.
