text seems to be fine for me. it sound like your regional setting may not be set up to Japan/Japanese. check and confirm that it is.

Turns out turning off the unicode utf8 setting fixed it. I'm not sure why this was the case because I've played plenty of other eroge/vns without changing these settings but it's fixed now.
