To anyone who encounters the above problem here is the solution.

When you start a new game it asks you to type in the name of your character, but the snag is the game doesn't (appear to) recognise the text inputted via the keyboard (at least that's the best way I can think of describing the issue). So no matter what you type you will receive an error message.

You can thankfully paste text into the text box though. But then you hit another snag in that any text that doesn't use the game's font/character set (at least this is my best guess at the problem) appears as question marks, which are again invalid. So the solution is to use a text hooker program (I used Visual Novel Reader) to capture some of the game text, and then copy and paste those characters into the text box. The game will accept text entered via this method (although note that you are limited to two characters for your family/given name, so if you enter more than two characters then you will get the same error again).
