What's your understanding of a strong female lead in otome games?

Strong doesn't mean that it's based on how capable they're on battlefield.

Personally, I adore female MC who can fight plus they're also mentally strong too because that way they're not too dependent on LI. But no people is flawless and i do get that even in fiction too every female lead/MC is also not always a perfect being who can capable on doing both mentally or physically strong.

But, if i can choose between one of it i prefer MC who's mentally strong, clever, not naive, can be reliable by giving an utmost courage/advice for others/LI for them to became stronger and not giving up to despair/hardest situation and also the types of MC who "i can fix him" to be exact.

If she has flaws and isn't clumsy naive. These would immediately make her better than most Otome female leads.

I tend to go by VNDB's definition of a Strong Female Protagonist, which can take many forms.

The tough tomboy who takes no crap from nobody

The fighter with a strong will and self-respect who wants to fight for their own destiny

The refined but brutal schemer who is a ruler first, lover second

It can take many forms, and I like those who's strength feels unique and not just "she can kick ass therefore she is strong"

To me, a strong female lead isn't someone who is physically strong. She's someone who has her own goals, makes her own decisions, and grows throughout the story. She doesn't have to be perfect or fearless, but she shouldn't rely on the love interests to solve every problem.

I haven't seen many examples like this, but I really wish the MC in otome could stand up to really pushy guys and even be a bit of a badass with a strong personality—but the kind of badass you'd root for until the very end and still feel for.

Maybe I'm am outlier when it comes to this (and I'm not articulate enough to explain) but imo a "bad" heroine to me was Juliet from RBL. (Don't know why, maybe just didn't vibe with her) But a lot of the more typically 'bad' MCs I find to be very interesting- Amnesias MC in particular as well as Ceres in Virche. But I can see why others tend not to like these types. : 3

For me, a strong female lead is someone who is mentally strong and doesn't give up easily. She doesn't have to be able to fight. She needs a strong will. A strong female lead is someone who doesn't give up or changes her mind easily, even if she's in a situation where there's not much she can do or she's even powerless.

I think women who have a strong sense of self are truly strong.
It's wonderful to be able to get back up after a setback and keep moving forward while supporting one another.

At first my understanding with strong female leads were limited to being bold, physically strong, having insane plot armor, having the best line comebacks in the script. But as time goes on I learn that kindness is also strength, asking for help is also being brave, being a giver is a gift.

As long as they overcome the conflict/issue of their story, they're marked as strong in my book.

I can say a strong female lead is not Yui from DiaLovers. I don't consider her one. The female lead in Kenka Bancho Otome: Girl Beats Boys is one of my favorite female leads. She can fight and stand above all the guys she attends school with. I can't remember if she was intelligent.

A compelling character. She doesn't have to be bold, confident, physically capable, any of that. She just needs to have strong writing quality.

My least favorite protagonist I've ever experienced, who I would personally view as incredibly weak, is seemingly often considered "strong" simply by the meaning of "able to fight", but her writing quality was awful. Being physically "strong" doesn't matter if her personality is completely unreasonable. I suppose if I were to choose "strong" in a more literal sense than just writing quality, to me it would be someone who can use her head. A protagonist who can fight but is incapable of logical thought for no real story reason is garbage.

I think a strong fl would be someone that can think for herself, not just agreeing with everyone else!! It's okay if she's not physically strong, or if she is shy, at least she has a mind of her own <( ̄︶ ̄)>

A win for me for it feels like I'm distant to the female lead. I'm not a self-inserter so seeing as how she can manage things on her own with little to no help from me feels satisfying.

No matter how stronge female lead, I want her to be a good inner heart but not naive. I want female lead to be smart and honest. Female lead choices are important to make good works. Sometimes over relying on male lead can make the relationship dynamic a bit concerning. Solving problems together and try to see what she herself could bring a change to the male lead life. But I don't want female lead to fix a guy. Its male lead responsibility to make choices that make their life better. Female lead should care more about herself and love herself.

I think I share a similar view to the original poster. It's not necessarily about physical strength; rather, I'd like the protagonist to have the agency to speak her mind when the situation calls for it. In many older otome games, I often felt like the female lead was just being dragged along by the plot throughout the entire story.

While physical strength is cool for a strong FL.

For me I've seen two kinds of bad female leads.

1. Damsel in distress/doormat: this is an FL who let's things happens to her, doesn't react and practically needs an ML to babysit her because she can't even try to get out of a situation on her own. Can't really say much about this type of character because I honestly feel like they have the personality of a cardboard.

2. Reckless idiot: This is someone who fully believes she's strong, sometimes is actually strong. However she self-righteous and so confident is her straights that it just becomes arrogance and stupidity. Every single action she does is based on her morals with the belief that her strength and mortality will fix it, without even contemplating the consequences it will cause for her, the ML and anyone else involved. This is a plain reckless dumbass that needs babysitting by the ML and not because she's inept but because just like a toddler of you look away for a second they will be found shoving a fork in the electrical outlet the next second. This type is more infuriating than 1 because they practically bring the trouble.

A strong FL is someone in between 1 and 2. She knows her strengths (or finds them) but knows where her strength begins and when it ends. She can be left alone and can handle some issues on her own, but also knows to ask others for help because she knows the limits of what she can handle.

While upholding her values and morals are important she also knows it's not always that easy and considers various options before acting and when things go wrong she actually reflects on what went wrong/what she did wrong and how to not repeat it.

An FL doesn't need to be able to do everything alone. Because you can be physically strong but have the cognitive function of a spoon, then all that physical strength becomes useless if not more trouble because said strength is not being utilized in a productive way.

I totally agree with this! A heroine doesn't need physical strength or genius intelligence to be strong. What really matters is having a firm inner core—someone who doesn't get easily swayed by the male leads or the situation, and actually stands up for her own beliefs. That kind of mental strength makes the story so much more satisfying to read! ✨
